Kaisertown
Suburban Neighborhood in Buffalo, New York
Erie County 14206
Older homes from the early 20th century
Properties in the Kaisertown neighborhood were mostly constructed between 1900 and 1925, and almost all of them are from before 1950. “It has the old-school charm,” Aichinger says. “People look at Kaisertown because they might get a house that looks like a time warp, since someone’s grandmother lived there and there’s generational turnaround.” Smaller lots make for a compact, urban feel, and Aichinger adds that there’s more possibility for multi-unit dwellings in Kaisertown. Bungalows, Cape Cods and ranch homes are the most common architecture here, while wooden clapboard or brick exteriors are typical. Prices typically range from $100,000 to $200,000.
Getting outdoors on the river or terra firma
The Buffalo River flows south of Kaisertown, comprising the southern boundary and splitting just to the east into the Cayuga and Buffalo Creeks. “I don’t think enough people take advantage of the river and the creek there,” Aichinger says. “Some people are totally jazzed about the fact that they could walk one driveway over from some houses and launch their kayaks, so you’ll see people kayaking over there. Further up, it’s shallower and there’s rapids.” Whether it’s setting sail on the river or staying on dry land, residents have a few options in the area. Houghton Park is the only established green space within Kaisertown, featuring a number of baseball fields spread across a wide, open area, as well as a pool, courts, rinks and a playground. A few minutes northeast, Dingens Park has courts and fields, while across the river visitors to Seneca Bluffs Natural Habitat Park can hike, fish and enjoy viewing wildlife, or even snowshoe in the winter.A district of choice for Kaisertown students
The Buffalo area serves as a district of “choice,” where students can choose where they attend. Many kids in the Kaisertown area attend P.S. 69 Houghton Academy, which serves kindergarten through eighth grade. Houghton receives a grade of C with Niche and ranks very highly in diversity. P.S. 206 South Park High School follows for the remainder of grade school, scoring a B-minus with Niche. South Park High also ranks 106th of more than 1,300 schools statewide in terms of diversity, while its clubs include band, yearbook and student council.Seasonal celebrations in Kaisertown
Halloween comes a day early in Kaisertown for locals, as the annual Beggars Night draws people from around the area. Kids can dress up ahead of Halloween and add more candy to their hauls for the holiday. In December, Christmas in Kaisertown puts on a display complete with live performances, vendors, a tree lighting and, of course, a visit from jolly old Saint Nick himself. On the daily, residents hit the lanes at Town Edge Bowling Center for some frames and food, or head to the East Clinton Branch Library for books or even occasional contests, like predicting the Academy Awards.Thruways through Kaisertown
Interstate 190 swoops through the neighborhood en route to the Canadian border, part of an auxiliary route linking the divide with Interstate 90, which nearly crosses the entire country. “You can get on the 190 in either direction," Aichinger says. "That’s the beauty of Buffalo – everything’s crazy easy to get to, for the most part. I live in Elma, and I can be in Rochester in an hour. Even Toronto is just about an hour and 15 minutes, maybe an hour and a half away.” The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority, or NFTA, operates buses that have stops along Clinton Street as well.Local fare along Clinton Street
Clinton Street almost evenly bisects the Kaisertown neighborhood, serving as the main hub of retail and dining for the area. Locals can grab a pie at Desi’s Pizzeria or peruse the all-day breakfast menu at local favorite Lucky’s Texas Red Hots, or listen to the jukebox and blow off some steam with a darts game at Porky’s Amber Lounge. Find more dining options and drinks at Wiechec’s Lounge, in operation since 1964 and famed for its fish fry, or at the Park Lounge, which sometimes hosts live bands. “There’s a few little boutique-style joints,” Aichinger says. “At Clinton and Bailey, there’s a little farmers market there, so that’s probably the highlight of that area.” The Clinton Bailey Farmers Market is a few minutes west, with a large lot where vendors sell fresh produce. Locally-owned shops on Clinton Street include Hector’s Hardware for tools and repair tips and Mike’s Homemade Candies’ sweet selection. The Nickel Plate, near the farmers market, is an eatery and marketplace that spotlights local creators alongside a dining area. Two Tim Hortons locations are also close to Kaisertown, and the Walden Galleria is about five miles away.
