One of the original Texas boomtowns
The word “boomtown” pops up all over Burkburnett as a nod to the Texas city’s place in history. Situated midway between Dallas and Oklahoma City and a stone’s throw from the Red River, Burkburnett was the center of a massive oil boom in the early 20th century. The city was even featured in the 1940 film “Boom Town.” By the film’s release, the petroleum industry and the city’s population were already in decline. But when Sheppard Air Force Base was established nearby, more people were drawn to the area. The current population hovers around 10,000, with many residents commuting to Wichita Falls, 15 miles away. “I lived there for over 30 years and raised my children there. It’s a bedroom community,” says Carrie Simpson, property manager for Hardy Real Estate and Construction. “The schools are great, and there are plenty of community activities.”
The early 1900s oil boom put Burkburnett on the map, even featuring in Boom Town.

A 10-minute drive to Wichita Falls
Aside from a centrally located supermarket and shopping center, most of the city’s commercial activity is restricted to several fast-food chains and car dealerships near the interstate. “It has a small downtown, but there’s not much commerce there. Just a few banks,” Simpson says. Most locals drive to Wichita Falls when it’s time to do the shopping.

Airplane noise and crime data
Winters are mild in this part of Texas, while summers are brutally hot and humid. City officials gathered in late 2024 to address the issue of high nitrate levels in the water, which can pose health risks. Residents also contend with airplane noise from the military base, but according to Simpson, most take it in stride. “There’s always going to be noise from planes, but it’s not unsettling,” she says.
According to FBI and Texas Department of Public Safety data, rates of violent and property-related crime have decreased significantly in the past decade. However, 2023 numbers saw a slight increase over the previous year.
