A New England settlement in Isanti County, Minnesota

Nearly 1,500 miles from Cambridge, Massachusetts and Harvard University is the small city of Cambridge, Minnesota, sometimes called the "City on the Rum River." New Englanders put down roots in this riverfront town — which is named after its Massachusetts equivalent — during the latter half of the 19th century, and populations climbed throughout the early 1900s thanks to an influx of Swedish immigrants. Flour mills and lightbulb plants thrived, and small businesses sprung up along Main Street. Today, Cambridge's 10,500 residents are dispersed across approximately 8 square miles, and families enjoy access to public parks and nature preserves, big-box shopping options and Highway 65, which allows for easy commutes to Minneapolis about 45 miles south. Amy Norling, community development specialist for the City of Cambridge, says she often recognizes familiar faces at downtown events. "It's a friendly place. We like to give a chance before we jump to conclusions," she says.

The Cambridge-Isanti Public School District, adult education and public library programs

Cambridge is home to four public schools, all of which belong to the C-plus-rated Cambridge-Isanti Public School District. There are more educational opportunities — everything from citizenship classes to digital literacy programs — available at the Adult Enrichment Center on 5th Avenue. The city's public library also has a course catalog for community members of all ages. Some students apply to Cambridge Christian School, which offers kindergarten through twelfth grade education and Anoka-Ramsey Community College's Cambridge campus opened in the late '70s.

Medical care, modern industrial parks and Minneapolis 45 miles away

Potato starch factories and flour mills have long since shut down in Cambridge, but there are still plenty of employment opportunities. Cambridge Medical Center, an 86-bed facility at the center of town, has a staff of around 900, and North Industrial Park and Southeast Industrial Park are both home to a variety of manufacturers. The larger city of Minneapolis is 45 miles south via Highway 65, a drive that takes around 50 minutes, and most residents will book flights out of the Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport. The Cambridge Bus stops hourly at high-traffic areas like City Center Mall, the community college, Cambridge Medical Center and Cambridge-Isanti High School. In recent years, the city has seen a dramatic decrease in crime rates. According to FBI data, property crimes, in particular, are at an all-time low.

Main Street shopping and big box stores off Highway 95

An eclectic mix of cafes, pizza joints, florists and gyms line Main Street in downtown Cambridge, and new movies are screened at the GTI Theatre. On Saturday mornings throughout the summer and fall, vendors set up booths in the City Center Mall parking lot to sell produce and fresh-baked goods. The market moves indoors in the wintertime when sub-zero days aren't uncommon. "Typically, we hold about six inches of snow on the ground during our winter season," says Norling, adding that "sometimes it gets blistering cold." There are big-box stores off Highway 95, and the city's economic development department has worked to bring more retailers and apartment units to the Main Street business district.

Walking trails, ice skating and Rum River fishing in local parks

There are more than 15 public parks, nature preserves and recreational facilities in Cambridge; some feature paved trails and colorful playgrounds, whereas others are more rugged with dirt pathways and vine-covered trees. Snowmobilers head to Spirit River Nature area in the wintertime, and Central Green has two different ice rinks directly south of Cambridge Medical Center. City Park is one of the largest in town, home to multiple playgrounds, a disc golf course and Rum River fishing piers. Residents can also rent garden plots or raised beds in the Cambridge Community Garden, and there's indoor recreation at the Armed Forces Reserve and Community Center.

Winterfest and summertime concerts

Cold weather in Cambridge doesn't put a stop to community events. In February, families can look forward to carriage rides, dog sleds and a snow sculpture contest at Winterfest, where kids can also make free s'mores while supplies last. Summer means Concerts in the Park, and attendees are encouraged to bring their own blankets and folding chairs. However, according to Norling, Street Dances are the most popular summertime tradition. "We get to shut down Main Street and hire a band. It really brings a lot of foot traffic into our downtown area." Sometimes, only five people get up to dance, and sometimes it's a crowd. "Nobody really cares; they're just having fun with their families," says Norling. There's also an annual Arts & Crafts Fair in August, monthly outdoor movie nights around the city and the Isanti County Fair for five days in July.
