Camino offers a quiet rural lifestyle amid mountain orchards

Set in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, Camino is a small town that defies the typical postcard image for California living. “We’re in Northern California, so it’s rural. We have mountains and we have snow,” says Realtor Sally Long Johns with Century 21 Select Real Estate, who has been an area resident for nearly 35 years. “Camino is located between Sacramento and Lake Tahoe. Locals also call it 'Apple Hill' because of all the orchards, which are popular tourist destinations for a piece of apple pie and a glass of wine.” Those who choose to call Camino home do so for the blend of rural atmosphere with a neighborly existence. For some, particularly those who move from the Bay Area, the weather in the foothills is the main adjustment. “I always tell people that you need all-wheel drive and a snow shovel when you live in Camino,” Johns says.

Buyers will find small-town neighborhoods and multi-acre lots

Homes on Camino’s winding mountain roads come in a variety of styles, from A-frame cabins to sprawling ranch-style houses and stately New Traditional builds. While those in the center of town are clustered together in small neighborhoods, rural properties that look out over multiple acres are common as well. “One of the challenges that come with that, especially for Bay Area movers, can be adjusting to a rural lifestyle,” Johns explains. “If you haven’t lived with well and septic before, you really need to understand what that entails before you buy.” Prices can range from $110,000 to almost $870,000, varying based on the number of bedrooms, build year, square footage and acreage.

Orchards, golf resort and Lake Tahoe inform outdoor recreation

Golfers can head to the nearby Apple Mountain Golf Resort, which offers an 18-hole course set in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. “That course is challenging because it is very mountainous, but the views are absolutely stunning,” Johns says. “Between September and December, people come here in droves to go to the orchards and breweries, or to sit outside and listen to live music, or to pick pumpkins and apples.” Camino is also just about an hour away from Lake Tahoe, a year-round destination for hiking, swimming and fishing in the summer or skiing in the winter.

Area school districts have charter options

Area students are zoned to attend Camino Elementary School, which earns a B and serves children from kindergarten through grade 8. Camino Elementary is the only school in this district; however, families can enroll their children in Camino Polytechnic, a science-focused charter school that offers homeschool and hybrid homeschooling programs. Students attend high school in the A-rated El Dorado Union High School District, which offers limited open enrollment opportunities based on capacity. When applications exceed available space, admission is determined by lottery. El Dorado High scores a B-plus, and Pacific Crest Academy receives an A. Pacific Crest operates as an early college charter school on a hybrid-remote model.
