A welcoming suburban city for retirees and working professionals
Established in 1798 as a trade center and then a hub for farming in Mahoning County, Canfield grew in population and industry but remains quiet and surrounded by large stretches of farmland. The city, home to about 7,600 people, is in the center of Canfield township in the northeastern end of Ohio, near the larger Youngstown. There is a much older population there than the state or country average, with significantly fewer people in the labor force. "There are some families in the area but also a lot of retirees," says Sarah Blott, a librarian at the Canfield branch of Mahoning County libraries. "Many people who move here tend to stay here." According to census data, Canfield has a median household income of $100,000, while the national average is around $81,000. Poverty rates are significantly below average, and education levels are above the national norm. The city's historic streets have buildings on the National Register of Historic Places, and destinations for shopping, dining and events are nearby in other small Ohio cities.
Canfield straddles agricultural and suburban life, offering residents the best of both worlds.

Growing subdivisions with distinct architecture
Canfield is a city of subdivisions. Besides some historic Colonial-style homes from the early 1800s, nearly every house is in a developed area with equally spaced lots and uniform designs. As the area grew, architectural styles changed to reflect the times. Subdivisions with ranch-style homes are beside others with new traditional homes or grand Colonial Revivals. Depending on size and style, houses range between $150,000 and $700,000. The largest houses, which often feature multi-pitched roofs and a mix of brick and vinyl siding, range between $450,000 and $700,000. The median single-family home price in the area is $320,000. Townhouses and condos are also available between $230,000 and $375,000. While prices in Canfield are higher than the Mahoning County average, they are nearly $100,000 less expensive than the national average.

The Canfield Fair is the largest county fair in Ohio
Removed from the more populated and congested Youngstown, Canfield Township has plenty of outdoor space, surrounded by farmlands and county roads. Sawmill Creek Preserve, Tippecanoe Country Club, MetroParks bike trails and forest disc golf course are in the township, while the City of Canfield has smaller green spaces. Greasel Park has a playground, pavilion and six newly paved and painted pickleball courts. Fair Park is also within the city limits and has a large playground surrounded by regularly mowed lawn.
Canfield Fairgrounds is just south of the city — it's where the Canfield Fair started in 1847 and continues today. The fair takes place on Labor Day weekend and is the largest county fair in Ohio. Because of its proximity to Youngstown, many residents head 15 miles northeast for other large events like festivals, concerts and cultural celebrations. Museums for science, art and history are also in downtown Youngstown.

Driving outside of Canfield for large employers in Youngstown
The City of Canfield centers around the intersection of U.S. Routes 62 and 224, and manufacturers, suppliers, banks, small stores and city department buildings are in that area. There are no large industries or employers nearby, but "It's very common for people to live in one place and work in another because it's all within a 30-minute drive," Blott says. Some large employers nearby are Youngstown State University in Youngstown, the large medical complexes in Boardman and privately owned companies in Youngstown and Warren. Interstate 76 borders the city to the north and leads 66 miles southeast to Pittsburgh and northwest to the larger cities of Northeast Ohio. Buses run along Route 224 heading east to Boardman.
Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport is nearby, and Pittsburgh International Airport is the nearest with international flights and a comprehensive list of airlines. There are no hospitals or medical campuses in Canfield, but Austintown, Boardman and Youngstown have emergency rooms and specialty doctors within a 10-mile drive.

The best school district in the Youngstown area
Only 14% of Canfield's residents are under 18, which is significantly lower than the national average. Despite the low number of children, Canfield Local School District has an impressive overall A grade from Niche, which also rates the school district the best in the Youngstown area. The district has two elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. "Our library has a very good relationship with the local schools," Blott says. "We are close to the middle school, and many students come here after class to get picked up from here." The elementary schools offer all-day kindergarten, while the middle school and high school have STEM education courses, AP classes and competitive sports and performing arts programs.

Canfield experiences four seasons, with mild summers and snowy winters. Canfield Public Works is responsible for clearing snow after storms and salting the roadways in the case of ice. While public plows clear residential roads and cul-de-sacs, homeowners or landlords are responsible for clearing the snow on their driveways and walkways. During the mild summers, residents can golf at nearby courses or enjoy nature at one of many nature preserves in the surrounding area.
