North Beach's laid-back, oceanfront lifestyle
For those living in North Beach, the sound of waves crashing on the shoreline is ever-present, and residents are within walking distance of ocean views. Set next to the central heart of Carlsbad, North Beach has some of the most popular stretches of waterfront in the city and borders the Agua Hedionda Lagoon. Outdoor recreation here is abundant, and it's an appealing neighborhood for those who want to be as close to the ocean as possible. "It's a seriously gorgeous part of our shoreline," says Tim Diamond, a local Realtor working with Compass Realty. He's been selling homes for over 15 years. "You can walk everywhere and bike for miles down the coast. We get a lot of snowbirds and retirees in this part of Carlsbad."

Homes range from classic midcentury to chic modern styles
North Beach is mainly residential, and architecture spans a wide range. Many homes in the neighborhood, especially those directly on the waterfront, are elevated to keep flood risk minimal. Sleek modern townhomes, midcentury condo buildings and single-family Spanish Revivals can all exist on the same block, giving the community an architecturally diverse aesthetic. "Our waterfront properties aren't nearly as expensive as other areas in the San Diego area, but it's still rare that anything sells for under $1 million," Diamond says. "You can get a condo for somewhere between $800,000 and a little past a million, and even if it's not directly waterfront, it's easy enough to bike over to the beach." Single-family properties and townhomes can sell anywhere between $1 million and $4.5 million.

Diverse water recreation in North Beach
The outdoor lifestyle in North Beach is defined by its access to the Pacific Ocean, with Carlsbad State Beach and Tamarack Surf Beach both part of the community. "We have an amazing surfing community here. The North Beach shores are pretty laid-back aside from the weekends, and there's a trail that runs by them if you don't want to be on the sand," Diamond says. "That area has a lot of rental places, too, so if you need to pick up a boogie board, umbrella, or anything else, they probably have it." North Beach also connects to the Agua Hedionda Lagoon, called the Carlsbad Lagoon by locals. The lagoon's still waters are popular for paddleboarding, kayaking and fishing. For land activity, Pine Park offers sports fields, basketball courts and a playground.

The local vibe of Carlsbad Village and nearby retail plazas
North Beach, being a neighbor to Carlsbad Village, means immediate access to the area's locally owned shops and restaurants. Residents stop into the State Street Farmers Market on Wednesdays for fresh produce, pick up lattes from Interim Coffee and browse the stores at Village Faire. While North Beach has less commercial activity overall, Carlsbad Boulevard has a few popular waterfront restaurants, with Vigilucci's Seafood & Steakhouse being an evening hot spot for Italian dishes. Roughly 4 miles north of the neighborhood, the Shoppes at Carlsbad and its many surrounding retail plazas house big-box and grocery stores, such as Target and Trader Joe's.

Major city roads and commutes on the Coaster
Carlsbad Boulevard runs along the coastline on the neighborhood's west side, while Interstate 5 runs past the east. I-5 is a major thoroughfare running north-south along the Pacific Coast between Mexico and Canada. The neighboring community of Carlsbad Village has a stop for the Coaster, a commuter train that spans the 34 miles to San Diego. "You can get to San Diego in just under an hour. I used to ride there all the time and then switch to an Amtrak to take into Los Angeles," Diamond says.
