A neighborhood that inspired Steinbeck
Corral de Tierra is a small valley in the Salinas-Monterey sunbelt. Iconic author John Steinbeck set his second novel in the area, calling it the “Pastures of Heaven.” The actual name translates to “fence of earth,” referring to the Mexican rancheros who used the area to hold their cattle in the 1700s. The region features limestone cliffs that rise above the valley and farmland where bright red tomatoes grow, along with corn, squash and pumpkins. Verdant meadows and remote canyons serve as the backdrop to vineyards, farms, ranches and a plethora of subdivisions. What began as an expanse of vast wilderness was slowly transformed into a settlement, starting with Francisco Figueroa being granted over 4,000 acres by a governor in 1836. After California was ceded to the United States, more and more homes began to populate the area. It wasn’t until the Corral de Tierra Country Club was established in the 1950s that the community started to grow rapidly.
Today, residents of Corral de Tierra enjoy outdoor, sporty activities like biking, hiking, swimming, golfing, tennis and horseback riding. Far from city lights, this is a prime spot for stargazing, with constellations stretched before those who look up at the night sky. The community is also popular with plein air artists who create art outdoors with natural lighting. Those who move here do so for its peaceful, natural setting.
Secluded estates and condominium communities
Large estates sit on gated, private lots with plenty of acreage. Contemporary, ranch-style, Cape Cod, Mediterranean-influenced and midcentury modern estates, villas and mansions comprise the area, offering mountain views, equestrian facilities and dramatic, panoramic vistas of rolling hills. There is also a condominium complex in the area, Corral de Tierra Villas. The gated complex offers amenities like a clubhouse, community pool, hot tub, putting green and an indoor half-court basketball court. Units are two bedrooms, two bathrooms with sizes ranging from roughly 1,400 to 1,800 square feet. Home prices in Corral de Tierra range from $660,000 to $10.5 million.

Artisinal coffee and a breakfast stop with character
In “The Pastures of Heaven,” Steinbeck wrote, “After the bare requisites to living and reproducing, man wants most to leave some record of himself, a proof, perhaps, that he has really existed. He leaves his proof on wood, on stone or on the lives of other people.” This sentiment and the novel it came from was the inspiration for local coffee shop Castle Rock Coffee & Mercantile. Here, baristas leave their proof on foam and espresso by providing a warm community staple where people can greet their neighbors. Another local gem is Toro Place Café, which serves a breakfast worth getting up early in the morning. There are also burgers, sandwiches and large salads. Spanish bulls are depicted in art and knick-knacks throughout the restaurant. Corral Market & Deli is also popular for its sandwiches, wine options and prepared dishes.
