Revitalized business district anchors a resilient community
Named after famed steel magnate Andrew Carnegie in exchange for his donation of the town library, the borough of Carnegie is a Pittsburgh suburb in the midst of a sustained revitalization. In 2004, the remnants of Hurricane Ivan caused a devastating flood of Chartiers Creek, which runs through the heart of the borough. The result was millions of dollars in damage to homes and businesses. In the aftermath, a concerted community effort spearheaded by the Carnegie Community Development Corporation helped the borough rebound. Since the flood, more than 40 businesses have been added, and Carnegie’s traditional Main Street business district is thriving. “The CCDC is a stand-alone nonprofit that focuses on attracting and supporting our local business community, and our Shade Tree Commission helps take care of our public green spaces within that community,” says Phil Boyd, borough president. “They are all volunteers and a very special group of people.”

A wide variety of faiths are represented
Home to more than 20 churches and worship centers of varying faiths and denominations, Carnegie is known for its cultural diversity. The colorful towers of Russian and Ukrainian Orthodox churches near Main Street are a striking reminder of that diversity. The borough also contains multiple Catholic churches and houses of worship serving several Protestant denominations. In addition, there’s an Islamic Center, a synagogue and an Indian community center. Not surprisingly, the borough’s dining scene is equally diverse. “We have an incredible variety of ethnic restaurants in our community,” Boyd says. “We have Irish pub food, regular bar food, Afghan kebabs, Indian cuisine, Italian, Korean, Chinese and sushi. And, of course, we have a variety of excellent pizza shops, plus bakeries and more.”

Main Street is home to an array of dining and entertainment
Dining options are concentrated around the Main Street business district. Among the featured stops are Riley’s Pour House, a classic pub-style eatery with outdoor seating that advertises Pittsburgh’s best Reuben; Kabab House, a popular Afghan restaurant serving up Mediterranean classics; and Seoul Korean BBQ, a highly rated family run restaurant that opened in 2020. Main Street hosts the Carnegie Crawl on the second Friday of the month from May through October. “Its main purpose is to create a positive buzz in our business district and attract people to our shops and restaurants,” Boyd says. “Most of our shops stay open into the evening hours and see shoppers that wouldn’t normally come by during normal business hours.” For those seeking diversity in their beverages, Apis Mead and Winery creates its concoctions on-site. Made with fermented honey, mead is mankind’s oldest-known alcoholic beverage. Riley’s, which features live music, is among several nightlife options. The music hall at the Carnegie Free Library offers an array of performances – from concerts to movies to ballet dancing -- in a cozy theater setting. The library, which opened in 1901, also includes a well-known Civil War Room exhibit and hosts regular book-related events. “Andrew Carnegie built this 35,000-square-foot building for the community as a thank you,” Boyd says. For daily needs, an Aldi is located just outside the borough, and a Giant Eagle Supermarket is about 2 miles away.

Housing is relatively affordable and architecturally diverse
The typical Carnegie residential street is populated by an array of established, mostly two-level homes built closely together and priced between the mid-$100,000s and the mid-$200,000s. The architectural diversity includes brick Colonials and Tudors, Dutch Colonials, Craftsman and traditional bungalows and Victorians. In the outlying areas of the borough, contemporary Colonials, ranch-style homes and midcentury-moderns can be found for $300,000-plus. The relatively affordable housing is creating a demographic shift in Carnegie. “I’m seeing more and more young families moving into our community,” Boyd says.

Students only have to attend two schools for their educational journey
Students have access to a pair of public schools under the direction of the Carlynton School District. Carnegie Elementary serves students through sixth grade with a student-teacher ratio of 13 to 1. Starting in seventh grade, students can attend Carlynton Junior/Senior High in neighboring Rosslyn Farms. Both schools are rated C-plus by Niche.

Anchored by a large skatepark, Carnegie Park is the center of activity
Home to one of the largest skateparks in the Pittsburgh region, Carnegie Park is a sprawling recreational center that offers an array of outdoor activities. In addition to skating, visitors can walk its paved trails, play tennis, basketball, soccer and even DEK hockey. The updated version of street hockey utilizes a synthetic surface and can be played year-round.

Community fundraisers highlight annual events
Carnegie is a borough that takes community engagement seriously. Popular annual events include the 5K Run/Walk fundraiser for the all-volunteer Carnegie Volunteer Fire and Rescue Bureau; Cruising the Main, a car show organized by the Carnegie Police Department; the Carnegie Fall Fest, which also takes place on Main Street; and the Fourth of July fireworks celebration at Carnegie Park.
"All roads lead to Carnegie"
When it comes to transportation, Carnegie is arguably the most convenient locale in the Pittsburgh area. “Location, location, location as the old saying goes,” Boyd says. “We are in a unique geographical position between Downtown Pittsburgh and the Pittsburgh airport.” The former is about 6 miles east, and the latter about 12 miles northwest. Both are directly accessible via Interstate 376, which forms most the borough’s eastern border. I-79 forms all of the western border and provides convenient access to points of interest north and south. As Boyd puts it, “We like to say all roads lead to Carnegie.”
