The Woodlands is a scenic suburb at the base of Castle Rock Butte
The Woodlands must be Castle Rock's most natural suburb, the easiest place where the tens of thousands of people who have flocked to this central Colorado town in the past 50 years could go. "It's at the base of Castle Rock Butte, which is the center of town," says Steven Thayer, a long-time resident and the owner of Keller Williams' Thayer Group real estate agency in Castle Rock. Bearing names like Black Pine Drive, Oak Vista Circuit, and Bayberry Lane, The Woodlands' streets take a circuitous route through the rippling terrain between the base of Castle Rock and Founder's Parkway, State Route 86.

Contemporary homes surrounded by evergreens
Residential streets are lined with varying styles of contemporary houses – some have multiple roof lines, some have decorative porticos, and others have stone corners – that sit atop lots ranging in size from 7,000 square feet to half an acre. These houses fetch $700,000 to $1.4 million, mainly depending on the size of their lots and whether that lot is at the top of a ridge where you might have a view. Fir, pine and cedar trees dot this neighborhood's empty lots and spaces, potentially sending hundreds of needles to the ground that you'll have to rake off the sidewalks and green grass lawns in front of your house.

Douglas County schools serve most students in the neighborhood
Most of The Woodlands' students will attend Castle Rock Elementary School. From here, they'll attend Mesa Middle School, which runs a school-wide behavior support program called ROAR that awards tickets in a monthly drawing to students who are responsible, open-minded, aware, and respectful. Neighborhood students will then graduate from Douglas County High School. Respectively, these three schools received a C-plus, a B-plus, and a B from Niche. They're also part of the Douglas County School District, which the website said was the fourth-best of the Denver area's 20 public school districts.

Locals have quick access to downtown and I-25
One of The Woodlands' greatest strengths is its location. "It's close to downtown and where two of Castle Rock's main streets intersect," Thayer says, referring to the junction of Fifth Street and Founder's Parkway. This intersection at the neighborhood's southeast corner is home to a small shopping center where you'll find a King Soopers Grocery Store and the 212 Pizza Company, which prides itself on using locally sourced ingredients like the Palisades peaches that go into its Mile High Peach Pie. If you follow Fifth Street west from this intersection, you'll zip past the southern edge of Castle Rock Butte before cutting straight through the middle of downtown. Head north on the Founder's Parkway, which becomes a limited access, divided highway shortly after the intersection with Fifth Street, and you'll pass a Target and a Walmart on the way to a section of Interstate 25 that sits between Denver and Colorado Springs.

Trails and a recreation center keep the community active
Neighborhood children and their parents will find plenty to do at the Castle Rock Recreation Center. Located in The Woodlands' northwest corner, this year-round facility has three pools, basketball courts, a fitness area, a playground, and a Tykes Toyland open in the morning when their parents need a break. The rec center also marks the start and end point of the 2.7-mile Woodlands Bowl Trail, which takes you through some of the Colorado Piedmont grasslands that surround The Woodlands and are visible from its hilltop houses. These grasslands also provide a valuable habitat to the deer, turkeys and other wild animals you might see coming into The Woodlands as they search for food.
