With over 87 miles of trails, 50 parks, and 6,000 acres of open space, outdoor recreation is very popular in Castle Rock. Castlewood Canyon State Park is a local favorite for rock climbing, while the Pike-San Isabel National Forest has lush trails. Philip S. Miller Park is another popular park with an amphitheater and an adventure park complete with obstacle courses and a zip line. After a day outdoors, residents have access to an array of local restaurants and vibrant breweries to enjoy. This scenic city also attracts locals and visitors alike for its year-round special events. Colorado Artsfest at Castle Rock is the city's largest event, featuring an international fine art show with over 90 artists, live entertainment, and more. The Castle Rock Starlighting is another long-running event that involves lighting a giant star atop the Castle Rock mesa formation the city is named after.
Castle Rock Schools
Douglas County School District is one of metro Denver's best school districts. Douglas County School District is Colorado's third-largest school district, serving over 64,000 students across 89 schools, including 48 elementary schools, nine middle schools, nine high schools, five alternative schools, and 18 charter schools. The system also has 42 preschool locations. Along with charter and magnet schools, DCSD offers a variety of excellent programs, like open enrollment, Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, and gifted and talented education. In 2020, the district boasted a 91 percent graduation rate, the highest rate in metro Denver. Rock Canyon High School, STEM School Highlands Ranch, and Douglas County High School are a few of the district's top schools. Castle Rock is home to the Colorado State University Extension-Douglas County, known for its 4-H, gardening, and wildlife programs. The city is also about 30 minutes to several higher education institutions in Denver, including Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine, the University of Colorado Denver, Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design, and the Metropolitan State University of Denver.
Commuting in Castle Rock
As a metro Denver city, Castle Rock traffic can get congested, with the average commute taking about 27 minutes. The League of American Bicyclists designated Castle Rock as a bronze-level Bicycle-Friendly Community, thanks to its 50-plus miles of paved or soft-surface trails, bike lanes, and continued efforts to add more miles of trails. Castle Rock is working to have other modes of public transportation. Some other alternatives residents can use are the Taxi Voucher Program and the Castle Rock Senior Activity Center's “Senior Shuttle,” which provides ridership based on eligibility. Commuters can also travel to other parts of Douglas County, like Parker and Highlands Ranch, to use the Regional Transportation District's buses and light rail services to travel into Denver. The RidgeGate Station is the closest location for Castle Rock residents to access RTD. Although it's not for commuting, residents can rent the Castle Rock trolley for special events.
