Centennial was founded in 2001, and in just 20 years the city has become one of Colorado's largest and most populated cities. Located about 14 miles south of Downtown Denver, Centennial stretches across 30 miles and has over 110,000 residents. The suburb is one of the fastest growing metro areas, fueled by its proximity to the capital city, family-friendly atmosphere, great schools, and easy access to outdoor recreation. Centennial has multiple residential and commercial developments underway, including several mixed-used projects. This beautiful growing city has over 190 neighborhoods, but it is known for its amenity-laden subdivisions like Willow Creek, which has traditional single-family houses, a community park, two clubhouses, two pools, two playgrounds, six tennis courts, and 26 acres of greenbelts. Piney Creek Village is another sought-after neighborhood that features large semi-custom single-family houses. Modern condos, townhomes, and acres of land are also for sale. The average home price in Centennial is about $575,000, trending upward.
Centennial residents enjoy living moments away from some of Denver's most popular attractions. Although Centennial is filled with parks and green space, the city is directly south of Cherry Creek State Park, a sprawling park that's a local favorite for camping, jet skiing, and other outdoor activities. The town is adjacent to Fiddler's Green Amphitheatre, a popular venue for big-name musicians with scenic views of the Rocky Mountains. Other nearby attractions include Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum, the Denver Zoo, and Elitch Gardens. Having easy access to the Mile High City's hot spots is a major advantage, but Centennial has its own offerings as well. The Streets at Southglenn attracts locals and visitors alike for its concerts, ice skating rink, and abundance of retailers and restaurants. Along with a growing brewery scene, Centennial hosts a heap of events throughout the year like the Whiskey Warmer and the Holiday Artisan Market.
Cherry Creek School District and Littleton Public School Schools serve Centennial. Both school districts are nationally recognized for their award-winning academics and programs. Cherry Creek School District serves more than 55,000 students across 67 schools, including 43 elementary schools, 11 middle schools, eight high schools, three charter schools, one innovation campus, and one magnet school. CCSD boasts an 89 percent graduation rate and consistently scores above the state average for standardized tests and above national averages for the ACT and SAT exams. AVID Advancement, Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, Concurrent Enrollment, and CareerWise Colorado (an apprenticeship program), are just a few examples of the excellent academic and career-focused programs the Cherry Creek School District offers.Littleton Public Schools offers some of these programs as well and boasts several National Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence. LPS has received the Colorado Department of Education's highest accreditation rating eight out of nine years, more than any metro Denver district. The school system serves over 15,000 students and has several preschools and alternative programs, two charter schools, 13 elementary schools, four middle schools, and three high schools. All three LPS high schools - Littleton, Heritage, and Arapahoe - are highly ranked. Since LPS has such stellar academics and programs, more than 20 percent of students live outside of district boundaries and open enroll. Centennial is home to Columbia-College Denver, while Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine, Metropolitan State College South Campus, and Regis University are nearby.
Commuting in Centennial
Although driving is the most popular mode of transportation, Centennial offers commuters a variety of options for traveling to work. The average commute is about 23 minutes, which is less than the national average of 26 minutes. The Rapid Transportation District offers buses along with Call-n-Ride and Access-a-Ride services. There isn't a light rail station within the boundaries of Centennial, but there are some nearby stations that will take passengers. Bicyclists have access to 10 miles of shared on-street bike lakes, 24 miles of on-street dedicated bike lanes, and 55 miles of trails. The city is currently working to improve transportation in several areas. In 2020, Centennial created its first Electric Vehicle Action Plan, which aims to improve electric vehicle adoption and infrastructure. By 2030, the city wants to increase the number of electric vehicles to 18,000. Centennial Airport serves private aircraft and Denver International Airport is about 30 minutes northeast of the city.
