Canyon Shores
Mid-to-late 20th-century homes fill the community
Residential streets run parallel to neat sidewalks comprising painted addresses at the foot of two-car driveways. These connect to Mediterranean and Contemporary ranch-style homes built throughout the mid-to-late 20th century. Landscaped lawns with native plants like palms and succulents fill the remainder of the quarter-acre or less lots, along with backyard in-ground pools that appear throughout. Home prices typically range from $350,000 to $600,000, depending on size and condition. In Canyon Shores, a six-bedroom property on a larger lot can reach up to $1.2 million, while a home with similar features in Palm Springs would typically sell for more than double that figure.Landau Elementary School is a walk away
Many students walk to Landau Elementary School, which sits in the neighborhood's northwestern corner and maintains a B rating on Niche. James Workman Middle School earns a B-minus, and Rancho Mirage High School, a B. The high school houses the Helene Galen Performing Arts Center, where students district-wide can sharpen their on-stage skills through the Musical Theatre University. Mt. San Jacinto High, in the southwestern corner of the community, offers a continuation curriculum for students with specific learning needs. Local private options include Palm Valley School, which is 4 miles southeast and holds an A-plus rating.Retailers and restaurants sit along Date Palm Drive and Ramon Road
Date Palm Drive is six blocks east, making for short trips to Grocery Outlet and Cardenas Markets, alongside chain restaurants like Sonic Drive-In and El Pollo Loco. Local spots also dot the stretch, where locals can enjoy Japanese fare at Hamachi Sushi or stop by Henry's Bar & Grill to watch a game with a beer and plate of wings. Ramon Road intersects the corridor, home to Walmart Supercenter, The Home Depot and the retailers of The Springs shopping mall. The retailers and boutiques of Downtown Palms Springs' Palm Canyon Drive are 6 miles west.Parks, local golf courses and Cathedral City attractions
Panorama Park is a 3-minute bike ride north along Avenida Maravilla. The popular spot features a dog park, baseball diamond, playgrounds and pavilions with barbecue grills for gatherings. Public golf courses Cimmaron Golf Resort and Desert Princess Country Club, which Whittier notes as a popular spot, are both within 4 miles. In Downtown Cathedral City, residents can catch a movie at Mary Pickford Theatre or spend the evening at Agua Caliente Casino Cathedral on Palm Canyon Drive.Interstate 10 and State Route 111 are close by
Interstate 10 passes 2 miles northeast, and State Route 111 is 2 miles west, connecting the community to surrounding cities. The latter passes Palm Springs International Airport off Tahquitz Canyon Way, a similar distance west. The airport creates some background noise but flight paths do not pass over the community. Eisenhower Memorial Hospital is the leading medical facility and is an 8-mile trip southeast. Sunline Transit Agency services local travel with bus stops available on 30th Avenue and Date Palm Avenue. From Cathedral City LGBT+ Days to Taste of Jalisco
Whittier mentions Cathedral City LGBT+ Days as one of the community’s staple events. “It’s held around Mary Pickford Theatre and usually has a big turnout,” he says. The three-day celebration occurs in early March, and attendees can expect live performances, dance parties and the annual Bed Race & Parade in front of City Hall. The neighboring Cathedral City Festival hosts other local favorites like the Cathedral City International Balloon Festival and Taste of Jalisco.Passing planes and climate concerns
Due to its location and dry climate, the community is susceptible to extreme heat during summer. “They are calling for a bit of rain in the next week, which will make up the most of the 5-10 rainy days we get in a year,” Whittier says. He also notes that earthquakes are relatively mild. “We don’t have a lot of earthquakes here… I feel like we are overdue,” he says.
