A Centennial community decades in the making

Homestead in the Willows residents rely on their neighbors for support, community and... bread. Now raising a family in nearby Walnut Hills, owner Jeff Nixon advertises micro bakery Spruce House Bread in the Homestead in the Willows HOA newsletter, which updates residents on local building initiatives and makes sure they never miss an upcoming event. “Living near the place I grew up has been a huge positive for me,” Nixon says. “I can market to the families of the kids who I taught how to swim and people who know me from my time growing up in the neighborhood. A lot of the friends I met at Homestead Elementary School are still around, too. It’s the type of place where everyone walks to school together and keeps an eye on the kids walking home.”

Homestead’s 1970s-era homes

With mature trees providing shade for sidewalk traffic and antique style streetlights scattered throughout, it’s clear that Homestead in the Willows is a community decades in the making. Most homes are split levels and Cape Cod-styles that were first built in the late 1970s. They have since been renovated and extended to include two car garages. Prices for these homes sit between $590,000 and just over $1 million, depending on how many amenities were added. They’re lived-in, yet valuable properties that attract attention from those looking to settle into a true community.

Navigating the Cherry Creek School District

Homestead residents have their own preferred pickings from the renowned Cherry Creek School District. Homestead Elementary School—which earns an A from Niche—is a beloved community institution where neighbors play games at the annual Fall Fest and warm up in the parking lot for the Turkey Trot. Students move up to West Middle School, which also earns an A, before heading to college prep-focused Cherry Creek High School, the largest in-person high school in Colorado and an A-plus according to Niche.

The neighborhood is surrounded by Willow Springs Open Space, a large expanse of grassy land created by the Englewood Reservoir. It’s an access point for long walks through the South Suburban trail system and a popular picnic spot where locals watch the sunset and see local wildlife.

Community events in Homestead in the Willows

“If you’re in Homestead, you’re very aware of the 4th of July Parade,” says Nixon. “Everybody rides their bikes through the neighborhood in the morning and then has a big party at the community pool with contests and games. As a kid, that was always something I looked forward to, and even now it’s fun to go with family and friends.” Neighbors can read the latest Homestead Herald to learn about other events that happen throughout the year. They’re also just two miles from seeing some of the biggest names in music at Fiddler’s Green Amphitheatre, the largest outdoor venue in the Denver metropolitan area.

Commuting from Homestead in the Willows

Even with some schools and businesses within walking distance, Homestead residents expect to be behind the wheel to reach most destinations. To get to downtown Denver, they can choose between a 17-mile drive on Interstate 25 and a 50-minute trip from the Belleview Light Rail station, which sits adjacent to the Denver Tech Center and runs alongside I-25. The DTC itself is roughly 4 and a half miles away for commuters.

Local bites and Park Meadows Mall

To get the essentials, locals never expect to drive more than five miles. Park Meadows Mall—the largest mall in Colorado—is a 4-mile drive for Homestead residents. Big box options like Sprouts and Target are stationed in each direction at the intersection of Arapahoe Road and I-25. Family-owned Venalonzo’s Tacos is around the corner for dinner and drinks, and locals pick up their Spruce House Bread orders from Nixon’s front porch shelves after work. “My email list started with five people, and now it’s grown around 350,” he shares. “Now I get to be with my two girls when they come home from school. It’s been a very transformative experience for me and a chance to connect with my community.”
