Convenience, entertainment and historical parks in this Northern Virginia suburb
Located 25 miles west of Washington, D.C., and 5 miles south of Dulles International Airport, Chantilly is known for its convenience. “Tons of commuters live here because they can drive to D.C. and even Dulles if they work out of town a lot,” says Kimberly Ramos, a Realtor with Keller Williams Commercial who has sold several homes in the area. Locals can reach D.C. via Route 50, which bisects the community, or drive to a nearby Metro station. But with museums and entertainment spaces, like the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center and the Dulles Expo Center, Chantilly’s 23,000 residents can enjoy more than just a convenient location. “It’s a great place for families because the public schools are highly ranked, and it’s a really active area because of all the hiking trails and historical parks.”

Compared to Fairfax County’s median $750,000 home price, the median single-family home price here is $970,000, while the median townhouse price is $671,000. Houses typically sell after 17 days on the market, which is faster than the national average of 44 days.

Driving to D.C. on Route 50 may take a while
Route 50 connects with Interstate 66, making D.C. about a 25-mile drive east. Ramos says commute time can vary. “If you leave at 5 a.m., you can get to D.C. in about 45 minutes. But if you leave around 7 or 8 [a.m.] like everyone else, you can end up sitting in traffic for like two hours.” Fairfax Connector bus stops offer rides across the county, and several Metro stations are nearby. Less than 8 miles north, the Herndon Metro station follows the Silver Line, reaching downtown D.C. in about an hour. Inova Fair Oaks Hospital is less than 4 miles east.
Around 800 flights operate out of Dulles International Airport per day. Flight paths cross Chantilly, and locals often hear plane noise. However, Ramos says this isn’t a huge nuisance. “The noise becomes part of people’s everyday life, and it just kind of fades into the background.”
Chantilly is home to a few major employers, including the American Registry for Internet Numbers, which manages the distribution of IP addresses. Ten miles north, Reston has offices for companies like Rolls-Royce and Google.
