Cozy high-end dining at Vern’s
Locals can enjoy some of Charleston’s best restaurants within a short walk. “Cool coffee shops, funky stores, lots of trendy concepts come to this area first,” Brener says. Small neighborhood spots often have long waitlists, including Vern’s, whose chef was a James Beard Semifinalist in 2023, and Xiao Bao Biscuit, serving a variety of Asian dishes like okonomiyaki and bao buns in a remodeled gas station. Locals can rub shoulders with tourists along King Street, home to popular eateries like The Grocery, which has been nominated for multiple James Beard awards since 2020, and The Ordinary, serving local seafood in a restored 1920 bank. Boutiques, bookstores and specialty shops are scattered throughout the neighborhood, and high-end retail is a short walk south on King. Grocery options include the nearby Queen Anne Grocery and The Veggie Bin, or residents can head to Publix, less than a mile west.Cross the finish line at the Cooper River Bridge Run
Each spring, residents can cheer on the runners of the 10K Cooper River Bridge Run; the race’s last leg passes through the neighborhood before finishing a mile south in Marion Square. Brittlebank Park hosts regular festivals and concerts, including the Charleston Pride Festival each June and the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition each February. Just to the north, locals can cheer on the Charleston RiverDogs Minor League Baseball team at Joseph P. Riley Jr. Park.Brightly colored Charleston single houses
“Young families like the vibe because it is a natural stepping stone to buy a first-time home,” Brener says, “and then there are lots of investment properties where you get short-term rentals, so it's a true mix of lifestyles. One thing remains common: the desire to walk out your door and have a host of options at your fingertips.” Cannonborough-Elliotborough’s narrow residential streets are lined with dense rows of brightly colored mid-19th-century Charleston single houses and American Vernacular homes with double front porches; some early 21st-century homes are also available and incorporate architectural elements found in the area’s older houses, including double porches and bay windows. Single-family home prices here range from $504,000 for a one-bedroom cottage to $1.9 million for a four-bedroom Charleston single house. Condos are also available and can start at $200,000 for a studio.Fish the Ashley River at Brittlebank Park
Local kids can burn off energy at the playgrounds of two pocket parks in the neighborhood: DeReef Park and Elliotborough Park; both have green space and benches for residents to enjoy a picnic. At the 10-acre Brittlebank Park just west of the neighborhood, anglers can fish the Ashley River from the fishing pier, and kids can climb the sea monster at the playground or play a game of catch in the park’s large open fields.Easy access to Interstate 26
“The best thing about this area is location,” Brener says. “It benefits from a lot of connectivity to other areas.” The Septima P. Clark Parkway, which connects to Charleston’s eastern and western suburbs and becomes Interstate 26, is in the neighborhood’s north. The Charleston Area Regional Transportation Authority makes several stops in the neighborhood. With narrow sidewalks and low-speed residential streets, Cannonborough-Elliotborough is bike- and pedestrian-friendly. The Medical University of South Carolina’s hospital is less than a mile southeast, and Charleston International Airport is an 11-mile trip.Less than a mile from the College of Charleston
Local kids can start at Mitchell Elementary, a math and science magnet school with a C-plus rating from Niche, then attend the C-rated Simmons-Pinckney Middle. The C-rated Burke High has a 9:1 student-teacher ratio and offers advanced placement courses, dual enrollment courses at Trident Technical College, and career and technology education programs in engineering and health science. The A-minus-rated Ashley Hall School is a popular all-girls private option for pre-kindergarten through Grade 12. The College of Charleston and the Medical University of South Carolina are less than a mile south.Higher-than-average crime rate
