Newly constructed subdivisions and luxurious mansions on the Wando River
"A lot of transplants from up north have moved into the new construction homes in Wando and other rural neighborhoods on Highway 41," says Ellie Proctor, a lifelong Charleston native and former student at Wando High School. Homeowners' associations maintain these thoughtfully designed subdivisions and offer amenities like community pools, parks, and walking trails. Large condos start at $300,000 and go up from there. New homes with front porches and boat docks list between $600,000 and $800,000. Luxurious waterfront estates can range from $1 million to $2 million.Youth sports programs at Shipyard Park and neighborhood marinas
Shipyard Park is across the Highway 41 bridge. In addition to hosting youth and professional baseball tournaments, Shipyard offers private coaching for young athletes. Younger siblings can play on the park's nautical-themed playground. Neighborhood marinas provide residents a convenient place to launch boats into the Wando River.New schools with award-winning athletic programs
In 2017, the Berkley County School District built three new schools in Wando to ease overcrowding in Daniel Island's public schools. Philip Simmons Elementary received an A-minus on Niche. After fourth grade, students may transition to Philip Simmons Middle School. Rated a B-plus on Niche, Philip Simmons offers an interdisciplinary STEAM program. Philip Simmons High School also received an A-minus. In 2021 and 2022, Philip Simmons High won the Carlisle Cup, an award for South Carolina's top athletic programs.Protected from major flooding

Drivers can take Clements Ferry to Interstate 526 to reach the Charleston International Airport and East Cooper Medical Center, both 10 miles away. At the northeast end of Clements Ferry Road, the Wando River Bridge is on Highway 41 and connects residents to the nearby Rivertowne and Awendaw neighborhoods.Groceries and locally-owned restaurants are at Point Hope Commons
At the Wando River Marina and Grill, locals can grab a bite to eat while they fill up their boats at the fuel dock. Point Hope Commons is a shopping center with a Publix Supermarket and locally owned restaurants. Coastal Skillet serves southern-style dishes and hand-crafted cocktails. Down the road, Indigo Reef Brewing Company is an island hot spot.Boing, Booz Allen and Volvo
"A lot of new employers are driving growth in Charleston," says Jeannene Ondrasek, a Realtor with Carolina One Real Estate. "Boeing operates at the airport, and the new Volvo plant draws people." Booz Allen Hamilton recently opened its Charleston Digital Hub -- half a mile from Indigo Reef Brewing Company.
