Charlotte's first suburb
Dilworth is the manifestation of a dream by developer Edward Dilworth Latta to urbanize Charlotte by creating a mixed-use community filled with beautiful homes, accessible parks and industrial spaces. Established about 2 miles from downtown in 1891, it was Charlotte's original suburb. But today, it's a designated historic district, where a mix of original craftsman homes and new builds sit along wide residential streets lined with age-old trees. "Dilworth is one of the crowned jewels of Charlotte," says Shannon Winkler Lynch, a broker and Realtor with Savvy + Co. Real Estate. Along with its striking homes and beautiful landscapes, Dilworth’s proximity to the city center and the beloved Freedom Park makes it one of Charlotte's most desirable neighborhoods.

Craftsman bungalows and revival-styles dominate
Early homes were mainly bungalows, but developers have since introduced Georgian Revival, Colonial Revival, Cape Cod, Tudor Revival and custom modern homes to the neighborhood. "The houses are just envy-worthy, whether you're living in one of the smaller original homes or the newer mansions," says Lynch, who's been selling in Charlotte since 2011. As a historical district, officials approve all new homes and exterior renovations. Single-family options can start around $555,000, but costs can rise quickly and surpass $3.2 million. More affordable are the townhomes and condos in the area, with modest one-bedrooms starting around $190,000 and larger three- to four-bedroom units going for more than $1.7 million.

School choice includes over a dozen magnet schools
Students here may attend school in the Charlotte Mecklenburg School District, which received high marks for diversity and college preparation on Niche. They can begin their schooling at Dilworth Elementary School's Sedgefield Campus, which serves kindergarten through second-grade students and received a C-plus grade on Niche. They can continue their primary education at Dilworth Elementary's Latta Campus, graded an A-minus on Niche, before moving up to Sedgefield Middle School and Myers Park High School, graded a B-minus and A, respectively. Myers Park High, which has consistently been named one of the top 100 high schools in the United States by Newsweek Magazine, offers students a small college experience with a campus that spans more than 62 acres and includes 13 academic buildings. Dilworth residents are also zoned for dozens of public magnet schools, including Irwin Academic Center, a K-5 school specializing in learning immersion and talent development.

Basketball courts, walking trails at Latta Park
The 31-acre Latta Park is one of the neighborhood's most popular amenities and sits in the heart of the community, putting it within walking distance of most homes. Paved walking paths wind through open fields and dense forests past a full-sized Charlotte Hornets-themed basketball court, a picnic pavilion, a splash pad and a playground. Another popular outdoor space is the 98-acre Freedom Park, which sits just outside the neighborhood and is often called the Central Park of Charlotte. It boasts a 7-acre lake, a Carolina Panthers-branded obstacle course, and over a dozen sports courts and fields. The annual Festival in the Park is the standout event held here, welcoming Charlotteans and visitors to the grounds each Spring to enjoy music, local fare, and block party activities.

Shopping and dining along East Blvd
East Boulevard serves as Dilworth's main thoroughfare and is end-capped by popular grocery stores, small businesses and an array of bars and eateries that draw in visitors from all over the city. One popular spot along the strip is 300 East, a New American restaurant housed in a renovated bungalow with ample patio space. It offers a fine-dining experience with a seasonally shifting menu and an extensive beer and wine list. For something a bit more casual, Backyard Brew serves carefully curated, globally inspired coffee and quick bites. Dilworth is also home to Kid Cashew, a bustling indoor-outdoor restaurant offering Mediterranean food with a modern twist. When it comes to shopping, Dilworth residents have a handful of options, with popular grocery retailers like Harris Teeter and Food Lion located on either end of town and the Atherton Mill and Market, a shopping mall with more than 30 high-end shops and restaurants, straddling the neighborhood's northwestern boundary.

Annual events hosted by the Dilworth Community Association
Dilworth has over 1000 historically significant structures, which has led the community to celebrate its historic charm through an annual neighborhood home tour hosted by the Dilworth Community Association. A handful of residents volunteer to open their homes or businesses to tour groups as part of the event, which functions as the DCA's primary fundraiser. The neighborhood group also hosts the annual Dilworth Jubilee in Latta Park, a free festival with a pet parade, live music, food trucks and craft beer vendors. The Yiasou Greek Festival is a popular cultural event held at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral that has been deemed the biggest block party in Charlotte.
