Growing residential community near established attractions
Like Oakhurst to the east, Echo Hills is a neighborhood in transition, with residential developments springing up in rapid succession to take advantage of the community’s ease of access to restaurants, breweries and entertainment venues. Plus, there’s East Independence Boulevard, a major corridor which delivers residents straight to the city center. “It’s close to Uptown, and they’re doing a lot of redeveloping along Monroe Road, like putting in new townhouses,” says Thomas White, Realtor with Re/Max who has been selling homes in Charlotte for 4 years. “It’s also a pretty walkable area, with nearby coffee shops and breweries.”
Many of the older homes in Echo Hill are slowly being replaced by larger more modern homes.

Midcentury and postmodern homes
Echo Hills’ residential homes can be found between Fugate Avenue and Commonwealth Avenue, branching off larger thoroughfares like Monroe Road. Trees act as a natural buffer against the noise of the highway, as well as providing plenty of shade during the warmer months. Sidewalks are uncommon, but streets are wide enough to accommodate pedestrians and even parked cars. Most homes were constructed in the middle of the 20th century, sporting brick and vinyl facades. Two stories are hard to come by, with small cottages and ranchers being the most prevalent home types. Prices usually range between $300,000 and $550,000. There are also newer two-story homes that follow more of a postmodernist architectural style, with flat roofs, tall windows and cubic elements. They offer 3-4 bedrooms and go between $850,000 and $1 million.
Many of the newer homes in Echo Hills are modern contemporary in style.

Familiar supermarkets and quirky eats
There’s a Walmart Supercenter off East Independence Boulevard to the north, though more centrally located residents might prefer the Food Lion, Family Dollar and Home Depot down North Wendover Road. Common Market Oakwold’s a funky eating option, with indoor murals, corrugated walls adorned with stickers and road signs and a wide selection of wines and craft beers. And their menu’s just as quirky, with items such as the “Halal at Ya’” falafel sandwich and The Sinatra, inspired by a favorite cold cut sandwich of Ol’ Blue Eyes’. “Common Market’s kind of a local hangout spot, and they’ll have events like a popup market on the weekends,” White says. Lupie’s Café is just down Monroe Road, a long-standing restaurant specializing in Southern comfort food. Their spicy chili has attracted customers from mayors of Charlotte to Jerry Richardson, former owner of the Carolina Panthers football team.

Echo Hills is near a sports arena and an expo center
Bojangles Coliseum, the home stadium of the Charlotte Checkers minor-league ice hockey team, is located just a little up East Independence Boulevard. Bojangles also functions as a concert venue, attracting performers from Elvis to Chris Brown. The coliseum’s dome was the first unsupported dome in the country and the largest in the world for a time. Parking is free. The Park Expo & Conference Center is right next door. “That’s where they have a big Southern Christmas Show. It’s a big arts and crafts event that brings people from all over the place,” White says. The venue has also hosted events like the state fair and Jurassic Quest, an event filled with dinosaur rides, fossil digs and other interactive, dinosaur-themed activities.

Taking hikes and shooting hoops
Evergreen Nature Preserve’s towering trees attract migratory birds and birdwatchers alike. The park also offers a 2-mile trail popular with hikers and runners—at least, the few who know about this hidden gem just outside Echo Hills. Families love taking their children to Chantilly Park’s two playgrounds, while naturalists enjoy walking along the park’s riverside trail. At Labcity Sports Center, youths can take one-on-one basketball lessons or join a recreation team for themselves.

Highways and hospitals
East Independence Boulevard bookends Echo Hills to the north, and locals can take this road 4 miles to Uptown and Interstate 277, which partially loops around the city center. However, traffic can cause delays during rush hour. Alternatively, residents can take Charlotte Area Transit System line 27 into the city, which runs approximately every 30 minutes. “There’s discussion of putting a light rail, the Silver Line, around that area, but that’s still in the planning stages,” White says. A few medical clinics like orthodontists’ and dermatologists’ offices are just west of Echo Hills. Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center, a hospital, is under a 3-mile drive.
