Why Oakhurst attracts homebuyers seeking growth and convenience

Oakhurst is a southeast Charlotte neighborhood on the rise, with new developments and streetscape improvements taking shape, and the potential for future light rail access drawing closer. Housing ranges from early-20th-century cottages and ranch-style homes on well-established blocks to modern townhomes in new subdivisions. The Monroe Road corridor runs through the heart of the neighborhood, placing local restaurants, bars, and retailers just steps away, and East Independence Boulevard offers a quick commute to Uptown. A variety of school options, including highly rated magnet programs and private schools, adds to Oakhurst’s appeal.

Home styles range from vintage cottages to modern builds

Whether you’re looking for an older home or a brand-new build, you have options in Oakhurst. The neighborhood’s original cottages and ranch-style homes, built between the 1920s and the 1960s, sit in tidy rows on blocks shaded by mature trees. Development in the early 2000s added pockets of New Traditionals, both detached homes and townhouses, and there’s a growing collection of Craftsmans and modern designs from the past decade. “The houses have a lot of character. They're not so much the cookie-cutter homes we often see in new construction,” says Tina Bisson, a Realtor with Premier Sotheby’s International Realty. “I love Oakhurst,” says Bre Gaither, the owner of BG Luxe Realty, who adds that the enclave feels connected and community oriented: “You have that neighborhood charm and newer energy.”

What to know about Monroe Road upgrades and future light rail

The Oakhurst community is evolving amid several development projects. The neighborhood sits along a stretch of Monroe Road that is getting a streetscape overhaul, including wider sidewalks, more pedestrian crosswalks and a paved multi-use trail. Meanwhile, the proposed LYNX Silver Line light rail expansion would include two stops within Oakhurst, but construction is still many years away.

We moved here almost 2yrs ago. We love the diversity and character of homes. The neighborhoods are walkable and though we are older, we have always felt safe. What oakhurst lacks are Resturants, shops. I don't want to use the word "high-end", but much more than Jersey Mike's. Lastly, there is perfect spot for a grocery store like "Trader Joe's ". The demographics would support it.

I love living in the Charlotte area because it's become such a thriving place to be. There are new houses, restaurants and office buildings going up all over the place. Roads are being repaved, trees are being planted and people are generally friendly. I feel safe and at home in my community.
