Harbor House
Riverfront manors, new constructions and manufactured homes
Most of Harbor House’s residences can be found west of Interstate 485, while the eastern side is primarily made up of industrial parks and airport-related amenities. Sidewalks are had to come by, but as streets are residential, they usually attract minimal traffic. Old growth trees are common, particularly toward the Catawba River, where houses blend in seamlessly with their arboreal surroundings. The majority of homes follow ranch-style designs and date back to the 1960s and ‘70s. They usually go for between $275,000 and $400,000. Cape Cod homes and cottages occasionally pop on the market too. Riverfront homes are hard to come by, and their prices climb into the $600,000s, with a few outliers fetching over $1 million. Several manufactured home communities can also be found throughout Harbor House.School improvements and a nearby college
Berryhill School serves as an elementary and middle school for some of Harbor House’s young learners. In 2023, voters approved a Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools bond request. A portion of these funds will go to relocating and replacing Berryhill School with a new campus and redeveloping the old site into a park. Students can wrap up at West Mecklenburg High, which provides students in need with Chromebooks and internet hotspots. Both schools receive overall C ratings from Niche. Belmont Abbey College, a Catholic liberal arts school, is a short drive across the Catawba River.A comfortable distance from the airport and Uptown
Residents have easy access to Interstate 85, an east-west highway, and Interstate 485, which loops around The Queen City. Uptown is about 11 miles away by car, while Charlotte Douglas International Airport is roughly a 5-mile drive. Speaking of a house he sold in the area, Hall says, “There was a little bit of noise from the airport there. It’s not close enough to be right in the path of landing airplanes, but you can hear them from the sky.” This goes for most homes. The way the landing strips are positioned, it’s mainly the industrial park that bears the brunt of the airport’s noise. Charlotte Area Transit System bus line 35 takes passengers to Uptown, Amazon Distribution Centers and other employers, following Wilkinson Boulevard.Restaurants across the Catawba River and a local dive bar
Neighboring Belmont is overflowing with a wealth of local restaurants. Nellie’s Southern Kitchen serves up biscuits, chicken and dumplings, shrimp and grits, and other mouthwatering comfort food dishes. The restaurant takes its name (and many of its recipes) from Nellie Jonas, great-grandmother of the Jonas Brothers. It’s only fitting that bands should be frequently invited to perform live at this family-owned eatery. On Harbor House’s side of the river, locals visit Tony’s Bar, a beloved neighborhood dive and biker bar that’s been running for nearly 40 years strong. For quick grocery runs, locals stop by Nichols Food Store at the Marathon gas station. Other stores just a few miles from Harbor House include Aldi, Family Dollar and Food Lion.An outdoor center for thrill-seekers
The US National Whitewater Center is an adventurer’s paradise. “That’s an awesome place to visit,” Hall says. “You can do whitewater rafting on a manmade course and mountain biking and extensive high ropes courses. They also have a mobile ice rink that they put out during winter.” A 70-acre off-leash dog park was recently added to the center. Iswa Nature Preserve offers miles of trails for hikers to explore, along with riverbanks for fishing. On the other side of the Catawba is Kevin Loftin Riverfront Park, fitted with a modern, nature-themed playground and a launch for canoes and kayaks.Events that promote physical activity
The US National Whitewater Center is a hotbed of events. Highlights include Flow Fest, a celebration of physical and mental wellness with activities such as yoga and massage group workshops, and Tuck Fest, a multi-day music and outdoors festival that brings out amateur and professional athletes who compete in bike races, kayak races and more.
