Idlewild Farms
Suburban Neighborhood in Charlotte, North Carolina
Mecklenburg County 28212, 28227

Midcentury homes priced below Charlotte’s average
Split-levels, Colonial Revivals and brick ranch-style homes sit back on Idlewild Farms’ spacious lawns, shaded by lofty maple trees. Several apartment complexes can be found between Albemarle Road and Idlewild Farms’ subdivisions. Usually, there are sidewalks on one side of the road for the neighborhood’s many dog walkers, runners and other pedestrians. Streets are plenty wide for cars to park on either side. Most construction dates back to the 1960s and ‘70s. Some homes have seen recent renovations while others are ready for a handy buyer with a vision. “I was able to buy a home that, with a little bit of work, would be worth a lot more,” says Erika Pitman, Realtor with Keller Williams and four-year resident of Idlewild Farms. “Home values have been increasing. For the most part, they’re priced a little below Charlotte’s average.” Prices almost always fall between $300,000 and $450,000. Most properties are bought within a month. It's fun to play at the YMCA, and other parks too
Albemarle Road Park has a small open field and a short, wooded trail for getting some fresh air. A recreation center is right across the street, offering a playground and regular activities from a senior walking club to line dancing classes. There’s also Simmons YMCA for more recreational programs, as well as an indoor pool. Campbell Creek Greenway is to the south of Idlewild Farms, snaking through forests and subdivisions for about 2 miles before linking up with McAlpine Creek Greenway.Schools within walking distance
Albemarle Road Elementary and Albemarle Road Middle are centrally located, within a 15-minute walk of most homes. Albemarle Road Elementary receives a C from Niche, while Albemarle Road Middle receives a C-plus. At Independence High, all students receive Chromebooks that they may use outside of the classroom for schoolwork. Independence High receives an overall B-plus from Niche, with an A-plus in diversity.Events that bring the whole neighborhood out
A few community groups keep residents busy with fun events and activities. “There’s MoRA, which stands for Monroe Road Advocates,” Pitman says. “They’re just starting to get back and active again, but they used to organize big community events, mainly in the summer, like weekly get togethers at the park with music.” This concert series takes place every third Friday at the Embrace sculpture by Monroe Road. MoRA also organizes a 2- and 4-mile community run each Wednesday.Near Albemarle Road and future metro stations
Albemarle Road is the neighborhood’s primary east-west thoroughfare. Uptown Charlotte is about 8 miles west. A few Charlotte Area Transit System bus lines pass through the neighborhood, such as the No. 9, which heads toward Uptown, but none enter Idlewild Farms’ interior. The Lynx Silver Line is a light rail line that’s still in the planning stages, but when it's complete, residents can expect to be around 2 miles away from metro stations on East Independence Boulevard. The Hindu Center of Charlotte is just south of Idlewild Farms.International dining and sprawling shopping centers
An abundance of shopping and eating options can be found off Albemarle Road, from Aldi to fast food restaurants. A Food Lion and Walmart Neighborhood Market are also down East W. T. Harris Boulevard. Over a dozen car dealerships are found along East Independence Boulevard. Idlewild Farms offers several international eateries. Antojitos Catrachos serves up Honduran cuisine, while Ichiban Buffet Sushi & Hibachi is known for their Asian buffet. New York Diner is a long-time hot spot that serves American eats in comfortable, casual digs. SouthPark, an upscale shopping mall and one of the largest in the state, is 8 miles to the southwest.
