Lakeview
Suburban Neighborhood in Charlotte, North Carolina
Mecklenburg County 28208, 28216
New constructions mingle with 1920s homes
Towering oaks and century-old structures instill charm into Lakeview's quiet streets. Quaint 1920s bungalows sit alongside 1960s ranch-style homes painted in pastel shades. The wide, flat streets provide room for street parking, as many older houses don’t come with garages. Realtor Katie Hocker with Lake Norman Realty affirms that, although the neighborhood is still mostly established homes, more and more new builds and remodeled properties have been arriving on the market. “The road my listing is on has a lot of new construction, so it’s definitely an up-and-coming area,” she says. “It’s not quite there yet, but it’s coming.” While renovation-ready homes can sell for as low as $165,000, a newly built four-bedroom home can be priced at $400,000.DubC High is the pride of West Charlotte
Thomasboro Academy houses neighborhood students in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools district from kindergarten through the eighth grade. The school earns a C from Niche and sends students on to West Charlotte High, which receives a C-minus. Locally known as “DubC,” the high school has a long history tracing back to its establishment in the late 1930s. This historic institution persevered through segregation, and its success is a point of pride in the surrounding communities.A community coming together for change
Lakeview holds a CAP Index Crime Score of 8 out of 10, higher than the national average of 4. However, community leaders have stepped up to address poverty and crime in the neighborhood by forming the Lakeview Neighborhood Alliance. While primarily concerned with giving the residents the tools they need to survive, this organization is also dedicated to helping their neighbors thrive. Homeowners gather for lively annual events like spring and fall festivals featuring food vendors and music. A flourishing community is important to these locals, and their efforts have been getting noticed. United Way of Greater Charlotte, a nonprofit dedicated to promoting economic mobility in disinvested communities, is contributing to Lakeview's efforts to improve the overall quality of life. The Lakeview Neighborhood Alliance also has strong ties to the Faith Memorial Baptist Church, a neighborhood church that also participates in outreach through educational summits and workshops.Parks and greenways within reach
Lakeview residents can get fresh air at Lakewood Park, a small stretch of fenced-in green space with a newly refreshed basketball court. Martin Luther King Jr. Park and the adjoining Stewart Creek Greenway are also a short walk down the road for a long afternoon outdoors. The scenic pathway forms a section of The Carolina Thread Trail, a regional project linking communities with an extensive network of greenways.Bus service and Interstate access
Rozzelles Ferry Road is a central Lakeview corridor funneling directly into Uptown, giving residents an express ticket to Center City in roughly three and a half miles. For trips across the metro area and beyond, Interstate 85 has an entrance right on the cusp of the neighborhood. Charlotte Area Transit buses run along Rozzelles Ferry Road, offering car-free trips to Uptown or John C. Smith University, where residents can hop on the Lynx Gold Line light rail.Quirky locales are popping up close by
Homegrown restaurants are sprouting up nearby in similarly up-and-coming neighborhoods like Enderly Park and Wesley Heights. “There’s a cute shopping plaza less than a mile away with bakeries, coffee shops, all kinds of stuff like that,” Hocker says. “The Batch House is a super cute bakery right off Tuckaseegee Road. There’s some breweries close to there, too, like Lucky Dog Bark and Brew.” The two-in-one dog park and bar is popular with locals and their fur babies and even serves pup-themed cocktails in signature “doggy bags.” Other nearby staples include Enderly Coffee Company, a community-minded café occupying a bright and airy hangout. For weekly grocery runs, residents are two miles from Aldi and Compare Foods Supermarket on Freedom Drive.
