Lansdowne, a peaceful repose from Uptown
Lansdowne is a peaceful neighborhood known for its wide, tree-lined streets and appealing housing market. Well-maintained midcentury offerings and increased construction of sparkling custom homes worth over $1 million draw homebuyers to the area. The neighborhood’s population is diverse, but the area is also home to a sizable Jewish community.

Million dollar homes with yards of the month
Primarily built in the 1960s, the neighborhood maintains many original home designs, including mid-century modern and traditional brick ranch-style homes. However, according to Suzanne Cowden, Realtor with Corcoran HM Properties and a native Charlottean, many investors are “tearing down older properties and building million-dollar homes,” steadily turning Lansdowne into one of Charlotte’s more upscale neighborhoods. However, Lansdowne has four active covenants, conditions and restrictions (CC&Rs) that dictate construction and renovation possibilities in the neighborhood, so homebuyers should be aware that making significant changes to properties is a regulated process. With sizeable, well-maintained lots, older homes typically range from $600,000 to $880,000, while new construction and renovated estates can cost up to $3 million. Yards are kept neat and lush, and Lansdowne’s volunteer civic league hosts a Yard of the Month event from March through October to celebrate residents who maintain a handsome property.

Shalom Park is considered the center of Jewish life in Greater Charlotte, so its presence within Lansdowne is significant. The campus features the Levine Jewish Community Center, Charlotte Jewish Preschool and Day School, a Jewish Family Services food pantry, a community garden, Conservative and Reform synagogues and The Margaret and Lou Schwartz Butterfly Garden Holocaust Memorial. The memorial, designed by local artist Paul Rousso, honors children who perished in the Holocaust.

Top schools, both private and public
Young students can attend Lansdowne Elementary School, “which is easily walkable or bikeable for neighborhood children,” says Cowden. “It has actually just been remodeled, too.” The school has a B-minus on Niche and “hosts many neighborhood events for kids to participate in.” Older students can move on to Carmel Middle School, which has a B-plus on Niche and was recertified as a national “School to Watch” in 2022. High schoolers can attend Providence High School, which scores an A rating on Niche and is ranked the fifth-best public high school in Mecklenburg County. Cowden also says private schooling is popular within Lansdowne, with Providence Day School being a top choice. This private school instructs kindergarten through 12th grade students; it earns an A-plus from Niche and is ranked the best private high school in Charlotte.
