Starmount Forest balances value and everyday livability

In South Charlotte, where home prices can be double the city’s median, Starmount Forest offers a less-expensive entry point. The suburban neighborhood, originally established in the mid-20th century, features a mix of single-family homes, townhouses and condos at comparatively attainable prices. It’s also an easy place to run errands, enjoy a night out or change up your exercise routine, with SouthPark Mall, Carolina Pavilion and popular sports clubs and parks a short drive away. Plus, commuters have multiple ways to reach Uptown and other job hubs, with quick access to major interstates and public transportation. Add in highly rated public schools, and you can see why Starmount Forest has wide appeal.

Diverse home styles on leafy lots with newer options mixed in

Apartment, townhouse and condo communities fill the southern half of the neighborhood. To the north, you’ll find mostly brick ranch-style and split-level homes from the 1960s and 1970s, as well as New Traditionals from the 1990s. These homes, lovingly preserved or recently renovated, rest on quarter-acre lots with mature trees. The new Starmount Cove development adds transitionals to the mix. Those properties sit closer together and come with monthly HOA fees of around $50. “I would describe Starmount as a little slice of heaven; not too busy, with lots of character and charm,” says Bri Forte, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty who grew up in the neighborhood.

A look at home prices in Starmount Forest

The neighborhood’s median sale price of nearly $440,000 is on par with Charlotte ’s median. “When homes go on the market here, they are sold quickly, and values are trending up,” Forte says. Here’s how home prices break down by type:

  • Condos range from the lower $100,000s to the upper $100,000s.
  • Townhouses range from the upper $100,000s to the mid-$200,000s.
  • Detached homes range from the upper $200,000s to the upper $600,000s.
You’ll find similar prices in Starmount to the north, slightly lower prices in Montclaire South to the west and much higher prices in neighborhoods closer to SouthPark, such as Madison Park.

Highly rated neighborhood schools with magnet options nearby

Starmount Academy of Excellence and the highly rated Carmel Middle School and South Mecklenburg High School are the neighborhood’s assigned schools. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools also lets students apply to a magnet school of their choice through its annual Program Choice Lottery. Nearby options include Quail Hollow Middle School in Cameron Wood, which offers an International Baccalaureate program, and the South Academy of International Languages in Montclaire South. “I really encourage families to do their own research on schools,” says Alexa Jordan, a Realtor with eXp Realty Mooresville. “There are a lot of opportunities in Charlotte for charter schools or private schools.”

Close to major roads, transit and key Charlotte destinations

With Interstates 77 and 485, the LYNX Blue Line, and the Little Sugar Creek Greenway within reach, Starmount Forest offers easy access to the rest of the city. “The location is a great area for people who want to be in the city but also have the flexibility to move around the city for things to do,” Jordan says. Popular destinations include:

  • Uptown, which is about 10 miles away (or 20 to 35 minutes, depending on traffic)
  • SouthPark, which is about 4 miles away (or 10 to 20 minutes, depending on traffic)
  • Ballantyne, which is about 9 miles away (or 15 to 25 minutes, depending on traffic)
  • University City, which is about 19 miles away (or 30 to 45 minutes, depending on traffic)

Shopping abounds from Quail Corners to SouthPark Mall

Several retail hubs are within 5 miles of the neighborhood. Harris Teeter, Walgreens and an urgent care center anchor the Quail Corners shopping center in Park Crossing, which also features a handful of local restaurants such as Rusty’s Deli & Grille and Wolfman Pizza. National retailers, including Target, Nordstrom Rack and Ulta Beauty, draw shoppers to Carolina Pavilion in Sterling, where you can also catch a movie at AMC Carolina Pavilion 22. But one of the biggest perks of Starmount Forest is its proximity to SouthPark Mall, Charlotte’s destination for name-brand and luxury shopping, with a range of restaurants, too.

Parks, trails and a love of pickleball

There are plenty of parks and recreation spots in this area. The neighborhood is home to Starclaire Recreation Club, where you can swim, work on your tennis swing and play volleyball. There’s also an access point for the Little Sugar Creek Greenway, which you can use to reach nearby parks, such as Huntingtowne Farms Park or the larger and more comprehensive Park Road Park. Pickleball Charlotte also calls Starmount Forest home. The popular club offers programs for seasoned players and those just joining the trend. “Pickleball is huge in Charlotte,” Jordan says.

I lived here for 5 years and it was the worst. The area felt very sketchy at night and our car was almost stolen multiple times. Also, the homes are of shoddy quality and require a lot of money to fix.
