Once a township on the South Carolina border, Steele Creek is now among Charlotte’s most growth-oriented communities. The area’s history dates back to the turn of the 18th century when experts suppose Scotch-Irish immigrants settled on its acreage alongside the Catawba River. Three centuries later, roughly 17,000 people occupy the area in homes accommodating a wide range of budgets. “We’re in a prime location in the southwest part of Charlotte. We are very close to Lake Wylie, there’s a big national preserve, and it’s very close to the airport. It’s like a sweet spot here,” says New Homes Sales Counselor Joseph Molo. His company, Mattamy Carolina Corporation, builds homes in Steele Creek, including townhouses in the Porter’s Row development. Residents are also drawn to the sprawling shopping and dining area in Steele Creek’s southeast corner, a commercial hub for many surrounding suburbs.

New townhouses and multimillion-dollar lakefront estates
Steele Creek occupies a large swath of land where North Carolina meets Lake Wylie to the west. Shopton Road cuts through its center from north to south, branching into winding residential subdivisions to the east. These are primarily 21st-century developments featuring Craftsman- and Colonial-style homes and townhouses — some brand-new. West of Shopton, homebuyers will generally find older, more spread-out estates, some with custom homes and waterside locations. Steele Creek’s average home value hovers around $470,000, though two-bedroom townhouses with attached, one-car garages start in the mid-$200,000s. Prices peak around $6.5 million, which might get a seven-bedroom, 15,000-plus-square-foot mansion on 11 lakeside acres.

Hangouts for hikers, anglers and athletes
Over 1,100 acres of Steele Creek are dedicated to McDowell Nature Preserve. This largely forested plot in the neighborhood’s southwest corner features miles of shady trails leading to the water. Visitors can launch their boats, go fishing, camp out or let the kids loose on the playground. A few miles north, locals can reach another public green space, Thomas McAlister Winget Park. It’s a favorite for competitors, with baseball diamonds, soccer fields and a disc golf course. During the colder months or precipitous days, residents can visit the Steele Creek Branch of Charlotte Mecklenburg Library for group storytime, private reading and other low-key activities.

Shopping that draws South Carolinians
The Steele Creek shopping area is a significant draw for all Charlotte-area residents — even those across the South Carolina border. It contains several developments along Steele Creek Road and Tryon Street, including Rivergate, which features Target, Chick-fil-A, CVS and other big-name businesses. “Rivergate is right around the corner — I’m talking less than five minutes from your driveway,” Molo says of Steele Creek’s southeasternmost residents. Grocery stores appear on all sides of the area, between Harris Teeter and Publix to the north and Sprouts Farmers Market to the south. Locally owned eateries include Hickory Tavern, part of a statewide chain originating in Hickory, about 50 miles north. It invites customers to hang out and dig into wings while watching sports on dozens of screens.
Steele Creek residents have easy access to Publix for all their weekly shopping.

I like the places and shopping areas in this neighborhood, but it really needs some more restaurants and food places for the growing community to eat at.

I thoroughly enjoy living in Steele Creek, it has a nice reputation and is a beautiful area of Charlotte. It makes me feel safe. There is one thing I wish I could change about the particular area that I'm close to in Steele Creek and that is the heavy truck traffic on hwy 160, Steele Creek rd, and Tryon rd.

We moved to the area in 2018 and were happy, but feel like it's going downhill. There are lack of any decent restaurants, roads are filled with traffic because there has been no road lane expansion (was planned, but then pulled), crime is on the rise especially in terms of car break-in's, many panhandlers are in the area, and trash is everywhere. Also, in the Berewick area, you will hear airplanes all the time. On a positive note, it's close to Fort Mill, Lake Wylie and other nice areas of Charlotte.
