Wesley Heights
Crafty homes and historic streets
Single-family homes from the early 1900s are most common in Wesley Heights. “Most of the houses come in arts and crafts or bungalow styles,” says Thompson. “However, you’ll see a few exceptions here and there, like more modern construction.” Town houses and condos in the area are typically historic buildings that maintain their original infrastructure but have newly renovated interiors. Structural renovations are regulated to protect the buildings' architectural integrity and unique features, like ornate trim, bright colors and original red brick. Across the board, properties in Wesley Heights typically have two or three bedrooms and cost between $350,000 and $675,000. Roads are tree-canopied and lined with skinny sidewalks, manicured lawns and the occasional hilly slope or white picket fence. While some homes may have a small driveway, most locals park on the street.Past meets present at Wesley Heights’ eateries
Wesley Heights is patterned with up-and-coming creative businesses and historic eateries. Open Kitchen, one of Charlotte’s oldest landmark restaurants, serves Italian and Greek fare in a cozy, memorabilia-laden setting. Rhino Market and Deli is also a long-standing neighborhood staple, providing a casual dining atmosphere alongside an eclectic market stocked with local beers, breads and grab-n-go items. Most weeknights, the deli also hosts live music or DJs for customers to enjoy while they eat. Animal lovers enjoy Lucky Dog Bark and Brew, a dog bar in Charlotte where pets can run around outdoor and indoor play yards while their owners sip on specialty cocktails and craft beers. The bar also offers additional services, including dog grooming, overnight boarding and daycare. While nightlife and retail demand exist in Wesley Heights, most residents head to Queen City Quarter, about 2 miles away, for a night out or weekend retail shopping. For an artistic and cultural experience, locals visit the LaCa Projects, a local art gallery that presents visually striking narratives of contemporary Latin American artists.Walking along the Greenways
Stewart Creek Greenway, a 1 1/2-mile segment of the larger Thread Trail, connects to Wesley Heights Greenway and Uptown Charlotte. Trail-goers can bike or hike along the Greenway and often come across herons, ducks and waterfowl on their path. Westley Heights Greenway is a more extensive, 3-mile nature preserve and creekside path that stretches across multiple neighborhoods. The trail is open year-round, and dogs are welcome as long as they are leashed. Seversville Park is less than 1/2 a mile north of the neighborhood and is a more traditional park space for children and families. It features a small playground with swings, a picnic area and paved paths for walking and biking.Nearby Charlotte education and academies
Students can attend Bruns Avenue Elementary School, which is located inside the neighborhood and has a C rating on Niche, or Oaklawn Language Academy. Oaklawn is a magnet public school with a B-minus Niche score. The school serves kindergarten through eighth-grade students and has an intensive language immersion program in Spanish. High schoolers can attend Phillip O. Berry Academy of Technology, which has a B rating and is Niche’s third-place standout high school in Charlotte. The academy’s curriculum includes rigorous mathematics courses, a sequenced program in a career or technical education pathway, a senior research demonstration project and an experiential learning senior internship.West of Uptown, cushioned by interstates
Wesley Heights sits between Interstate 77, 85 and 277, offering locals a straightforward commute. Interstate 77 skirts the area’s eastern edge, providing a comfortable barrier between bustling Uptown Charlotte. Residents also have access to the Wesley Heights light rail station and Charlotte area Transit System bus stops along a few main roads. The closest airport is Charlotte Douglas International Airport, roughly 6 1/2 miles west.
