A residential slice of "The Scenic City"
Cedar Hill rests between Chattanooga’s stunning nature and dynamic downtown on the Tennessee side of the Tennessee-Georgia state line. “The community is tight-knit, and it’s got an old town vibe,” says Robert Baker, a local Realtor with United Real Estate Experts and host of the YouTube channel Move to Chattanooga. “But it’s minutes away from modern amenities.” The small but long-standing neighborhood has quick access to Lookout Mountain and East Lake Park, the latter located within the community. Locals can also dine at several restaurants, many specializing in homecooked, Southern food, lining U.S. Route 27.
Craftsmans, bungalows and ranch-style homes line the streets
Residential Cedar Hill developed in the early to mid-20th century, with most homes built before the 1960s. Middle Tennessee's architectural styles are typical, with Craftsman houses, bungalows, and ranch-style homes along streets shaded by tulip poplars and white oaks. Many homes have porches, and residents care for their front yards, giving the neighborhood a small-community feel. Lots tend to be more compact than the sprawling lawns of larger suburbs found on the outskirts of Chattanooga; however, there’s no lack of green space as the neighborhood's hilly terrain rolls gently towards the slope of Missionary Ridge. For homes needing repairs, prices range from $40,000 to $90,000, while turn-key homes sell for $100,000 to $400,000.
Mountains, parks and former zoos
Cedar Hill is close to nature and the city, allowing folks to head downtown Chattanooga or visit Lookout Mountain with little effort. What was once the Chattanooga Zoo at the turn of the century is now East Lake Park. Lush with greenery, East Lake has a duck pond at the center with a gazebo overlooking the rippling waters. A scenic trail encircles the pond, making it a walking destination. Nearby, Camp Jordan Park has 275 acres of green space. This rec area has 14 soccer fields, 13 baseball fields, an 18-hole disc golf course and sand volleyball courts. There are 2 miles of paved walking paths, and the pond allows kayaking and fishing. There’s a rope and zipline course for the adventurous. Its amphitheater hosts live music and theater performances during the summer, while the arena is climate-controlled for year-round indoor activities.
Brew-pubs and Southern food staples
Big-name retailers, grocery stores, banks and pharmacies are all along U.S. Route 27. Chain businesses mix with local establishments, giving the area a unique flare. Area dining is also plentiful. Bea’s Restaurant opened in 1950 and serves a menu of Southern food that changes daily. "We serve everything family-style,” says Ben Bradshaw, a fifth-generation family member and employee of Bea’s. He describes the homey, communal feeling the restaurant cultivates. “Before COVID, we would even sit strangers at the same table.” Though the menu changes, the recipes have not for the past 75 years, including the one for their famous fried chicken. “Bea’s is a good reason in and of itself to visit Chattanooga,” says Doug Bradshaw, third-generation co-owner. “It’s a most unique restaurant." Also nearby, The Brew & Cue isn’t just about beer and pool. The causal bar also has signature pizzas and classic deep-fried pub grub.
The Hamilton County School District and local private schools
The Hamilton County School District serves Cedar Hill residents. Students can start at East Lake Elementary and East Lake Academy of Fine Arts, both of which score a C on Niche. Students can finish at The Howard School, which receives a C and is known for being the first free public school in Hamilton County. Howard School recently became a Level 5 designation school, a distinction awarded by the state of Tennessee that indicates the student body exceeded state academic standards.
While students are zoned to a specific pipeline, there are several private institutions to choose from. There’s Belvoir Christian Academy, Chattanooga Christian School and Montessori School, the latter within the neighborhood.
After graduating, students can study at Chattanooga State Community College or The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
Travel in Cedar Hill and beyond
U.S. Route 27 borders Cedar Hill to the west, providing a direct route to downtown Chattanooga. The Chattanooga Area Regional Transportation Authority also has several stops along Rossville Boulevard, providing fixed routes and paratransit service. Cyclists can ride the bike lanes along Dodds Avenue and Clio Avenue. The Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport is about 7.5 miles northeast of the neighborhood.
Crime
In terms of crime, Cedar Hill experiences more instances of assault with a weapon than the average American neighborhood, with a CAP Index score of 8 compared to the U.S. average of 4.
