Between the river and a lively shopping scene
At the edge of the Tennessee River, Dupont is a residential enclave full of midcentury homes bordered by a lively shopping and dining scene. "It's near Chickamauga Lake, you're 15 minutes from downtown Chattanooga, there's a ton of stores – it's just really convenient," says Evan Barron, a Realtor with eXp Realty. In 1948, the DuPont nylon factory opened a manufacturing facility across the river of downtown Chattanooga, drawing new workers to the area. Homes quickly sprung up around the factory, becoming the Dupont neighborhood. Though the facility closed in 2015, and a new manufacturer occupied the space, its impact on creating a community is still alive.
Mid-century homes along the hills
The largest residential area lies to the north end of the neighborhood. Curving roads lead to a sprawling suburban landscape, with homes dotting the hilly terrain. Many properties have long front drives, with homes set far from the road. Many of the properties in Dupont are owner-occupied, single-family homes, built during the factory's heyday -- the 1950s to the 1970. Though some contemporary housing is peppered throughout, common architectural styles include ranch-style homes, mixed-material split-levels and the classic bungalow – a favored style for Chattanooga. Contemporary homes have characteristic twists like center A-frames and attached sunrooms. Prices range from $250,000 to $500,000.
Dupont Park and riverfront views
Dupont Park has nearly 13 acres of lush greenery with four soccer fields, several picnic pavilions and walking trails under the shade of trees. "Dupont Park is the best place if you love disc golfing; it's got a really great course. If you're in Tennessee, disc golfing is a pretty big thing," says Barron. The Champions Club Tennis Complex is just west, alongside the Rivermont Park baseball fields and boat ramp. The south of Dupont borders the Tennessee River, making Tennessee Riverpark a quick trip across the C.B. Robinson Bridge. This park offers a ton of open green space for picnicking and stunning river views. For jogging and biking, the Riverpark has a long, diverse paved greenway system that winds through the trees and past the water.
Hamilton County School District
"The greater area of Hixson has one of the better school systems in Chattanooga— there's over 26 schools around the neighborhood, so there's plenty of options," Barron says. Students in Dupont fall within the Hamilton County School District. They can attend Dupont Elementary, Hixson Middle School and Hixson High School, all of which scored B's on Niche. Hixson High has several hands-on Future Ready Institutes in subjects such as healthcare, agriculture and business to prepare students for life post-graduation. Chattanooga State Community College is 3 miles away, just across the Tennessee River, and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga is about 7 miles south.
Bordered by a bustling shopping and dining district
State Route 153 borders Dupont to the east, while State Route 319 bisects the neighborhood. Proximity to these major roads provides Dupont access to major commercial areas, such as Northgate Mall, which has big-box stores, restaurants and a kids’ play area. Just north along State Route 153 is a Walmart and Target. Sprinkled in with the big-name retailers are locally owned businesses, such as salons, gift shops and restaurants. Little Tokyo Express serves fresh hibachi, and Fiesta Mexicana is a popular local spot with a festive vibe. According to Manager Asher Merida, the Pollo con Arroz is particularly popular. “it’s called Pollo con Arroz on the menu, but a lot of people know it as pollo loco,” says Merida. “It sells out every single day.”
Travel in Dupont and beyond
The Chattanooga Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA) serves several bus stops along Hixson Pike, with routes to the Northgate Mall. The Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport is about 8 miles south, and the CHI Memorial Hospital is located within Northgate.
