Central Cheektowaga offers easy access to shopping and travel

Located about 10 miles west of Buffalo, suburban Central Cheektowaga is a shopping hub near highways and the airport. “It’s a very small town where everybody knows everybody,” says Mary Kosmider, a Realtor and office administrator with WNY Metro Roberts Realty who lives in the area. “It’s very homey. I can't walk into a grocery store without someone saying hi.” The Walden Galleria, which is the largest shopping mall in Western New York, is a big draw for the area. “It’s in the first ring of the city. After Buffalo, Cheektowaga is the first town,” says Mary Schemm, a licensed associate real estate broker with Howard Hanna Real Estate Services who also lives in Central Cheektowaga. “It’s really centrally located. Downtown, the airport — you're really in the middle, and the expressway’s right here.”

Midcentury homes with manicured lawns line residential streets

“Around the town park area is primarily Cape Cods, and as you move out from there, you’ll find more ranch-styles and split-levels,” Schemm says. Most houses here were built in the 1950s and ‘60s and sit close together along sidewalk-lined streets. Yards are large enough for a manicured lawn, an ornamental tree and a paved driveway that often leads to a detached garage in the back. Prices typically range from around $150,000 to $400,000, and taxes are higher than in surrounding communities. “Cheektowaga is all developed already,” Kosmider says. “There's no land to be bought, and that’s why taxes are higher here.”
Multifamily houses here usually have two units and are mostly located west of Harlem Road; these can range from $130,000 to $390,000. Manufactured homes, which are concentrated on the east side, range from $10,000 to $130,000. Some newly built townhouses are also in this area, ranging from around $400,000 to $410,000. There are also rental options in apartment complexes and duplexes.

Convenient access to the airport and downtown Buffalo

Interstate 90 passes through the community’s center, leading to interstates like I-190, which connects to Buffalo in about 10 miles, a drive that takes roughly 15 minutes. “At 3 or 4 o’clock, it might take a little longer, but only like five minutes longer. Normally, it moves pretty good,” Schemm says. Those living near the interstate might hear traffic noise. The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority has bus routes throughout the community. Some roads have dedicated bike lanes, and sidewalks make the area pedestrian-friendly.
Houses of worship here include Our Lady Help of Christians and Baitul Jannah Jame Masjid Cheektowaga Muslim Center. The St. Jospeh Campus of Sisters of Charity Hospital is near Cheektowaga Town Park. Buffalo Niagara International Airport borders the community to the north. “For me to get to the airport, it takes about six minutes,” Schemm says. She says airplane noise isn’t an issue for most of the community, but those living around Union and Beach Roads might be affected.

A busy commercial district anchored by the Walden Galleria

Most of Central Cheektowaga’s retail and restaurants are along Walden Avenue, and much of it is concentrated around the Walden Galleria, an indoor mall with over 200 stores. The Galleria is anchored by Macy’s and JCPenney, and it has smaller retailers like American Eagle and Famous Footwear. Chain restaurants like Texas Roadhouse and locally owned options are spread throughout the community. La Bella Sicilia is a local favorite that’s been serving Italian comfort food for over 28 years. Teton Kitchen is known for its Thai food and sushi. Grocery stores here include Tops, Aldi and Wegman’s.

Parks provide various activities in every season

Cheektowaga Town Park is the community’s largest green space, featuring a playground, sports fields and a paved walking path. The park also has an outdoor swimming pool that’s open in the summer. Buffalo’s winters are often cold and snowy. “We seem to have a bad name for snow,” Schemm says. “We get a couple of heavy storms, which I always love because everything is closed, but normally it isn’t that bad. They clean it up really fast.” Kids can join the Cheektowaga Warriors Hockey Program and play at the town park’s indoor ice rink. The park also has a community center where kids can play indoor soccer and basketball. The public Diamond Hawk Golf Course has an 18-hole course, practice facility and golf leagues. Nearby, Stiglmeier Park and the Reinstein Woods Nature Preserve are known for forested hiking trails and wildlife viewing, and these are popular areas for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in winter.

Pierogi and polka at the Cheektowaga Polish American Arts Festival

The Cheektowaga Polish American Arts Festival has taken place each July in Cheektowaga Town Park since 1979. The event celebrates the area's large Polish American community with three days of polka music, crafts demonstrations and dancing. “They have original Polish dancers, Polish food and Polish music,” Kosmider says. “It’s a big community get-together. It’s a lot of running into people you know.”
