A west Cincinnati suburb highlighted by its Harvest Home Festival
For over 150 years, the people of Cheviot, a city in west Cincinnati, have gathered side by side along central Harrison Avenue to cheer on the parade of school marching bands, pick favorite floats and catch candy. “The Harvest Home Festival is a huge tradition in Cheviot,” says Kathie Currier, a real estate agent with Coldwell Banker Realty. “People put their chairs out days in advance for the parade. I was in the parade when I was in grade school—and we’re talking the 1950s.” Growing each year, the Harvest Home Festival, also known as “the biggest little fair in Ohio,” brings the community together for three busy days of art, food and festivities. In the evenings, live music fades over the residential streets, where brick-patterned bungalows and colonials sit between stretching sycamores and oaks.
Shops and restaurants on Harrison Avenue
On shopping days, Cheviot’s main road, Harrison Avenue, features restaurants and retail stores. Visitors can burn through their to-do list at stores like AutoZone or Lisa Rose Alterations. After a day of errands, some treat themselves to a sophisticated night out at Maury’s Tiny Cove, a popular place for romantic dates, small business meetings and birthday celebrations. “Maury’s has a nice, homey feel to it,” Currier says. Dim, moody lighting, wood-paneled walls and leather seats preserve the same old-fashioned feeling that once defined the establishment in the 1950s. For those in the mood for something livelier, Legends Bar and Concert Venue has a booked stage that comes to life with guitar riffs and colorful light shows three to four times a week. When needing groceries, a shopping plaza just south of Cheviot has a Kroger and Target.

Experience the Harvest Home Festival
At the Harvest Home Festival, local artisans can sign up as vendors, and visitors can hop from booth to booth, catching up with neighbors and promoting local business. “It’s a great volunteer effort and a great way for nonprofits to make money to help the community,” Currier says. “It’s just like the state fair, but mini-sized.” A yearly art show, needlework contest and baking competition allow locals to showcase their creative talents, while youth can participate in the educational Hamilton County Junior Fair Program, which organizes livestock exhibits and hands-on learning experiences.
