Generations working together south of downtown
Auburn Gresham is a neighborhood where people know and work together. “It’s a connected community,” says Paulette Hollingsworth, a real estate broker with Baird & Warner since 2023. “A lot of people grew up there and still live in their childhood home.” The Greater Auburn Gresham Development Corporation, or GAGDC, was first created in 2003 and was created to support the community, with local residents, including church leaders at Saint Sabina Church, joining and helping to create programs and activities such as the 79th Street Renaissance Festival. The festival has drawn over 20,000 people in the past and shuts down the entire street for the day. In addition to St. Sabina, there are about 20 other houses of worship within the neighborhood. Auburn Gresham has a crime score of 5 from the CAP Index.

Chicago bungalows in need of renovations and completed renovations
Most of the homes in the neighborhood are Chicago-style bungalows with a median price of $195,000. There is a fairly equal number of renters and owners in Auburn Gresham, with some Chicago flats with two units available for around $350,000. Throughout the neighborhood are signs of change, with bungalows in need of renovations beginning around $60,000 and reaching $155,000 for a pre-gutted home. Homes that have been renovated can begin around $200,000 and reach $400,000 for those completed within the last few years. “People like the area because of the size of the homes for the price point,” Hollingsworth says. As with most Chicago neighborhoods, the roads and blocks stretch from one end to the other in one unbroken line, with homes and lots close together. Homes often back up to alley access, although not all will include garages. There are a few Chicago Georgian style homes as well, priced at about $260,000.

Block parties, honoring seniors and shutting down the street for festivals
GAGDC has several events throughout the year, including the annual Breakfast and Blues Event and the 79th Street Renaissance Festival. The Breakfast and Blues Event has occurred for almost 15 years and is for the seniors of the neighborhood, where they can get a hot, hearty breakfast as a live blues band performs. The 79th Street Renaissance Festival, typically held early in September, first began in 2006 and has grown to include live music, local venders and sometimes includes a petting zoo and carnival rides. “There will also be block clubs, where the residents of a specific block have summertime or back to school parties,” says Hollingsworth. St. Sabina also offers programs throughout the year for children, such as dance and drama.
