Suburban feel in an urban city
In a big urban city like Chicago the Mayfair neighborhood captures a bit of the opposite. “It’s the first neighborhood that’s mostly single-family. It lends itself as a less urban and more suburban feel,” says BJ Tregoning, a real estate agent at Coldwell Banker with 23 years of experience. The area sits south of the historic North Mayfair, allowing a hint of the famous Chicago brick bungalows and sprinkles of other architecture. It provides a close-knit feel with proximity to several transportation options.
Chicago brick bungalows with sprinkles of other architecture
Most Chicago brick bungalows are north of Wilson Avenue and east of Elston Ave. Throughout the rest of Mayfair is a combination of custom-built craftsmen, Dutch-colonial bungalows, raised ranches, and two-flats. “There are two to four units scattered throughout,” Tregoning says. A majority of houses were built in the early century. Interiors usually carry two to four bedrooms; many have finished basements. Residents should expect street parking and limited front lawn spaces. For under $300,000, condos and two flats are within that price range. Anything above $300,000 is a single-family house, with prices peaking at $900,000.

Multiple public transportation options
Neighborhood borders ensure that residents can get around easily. Buses run along Montrose to the south and Lawrence to the north. Buses also run along the eastern border of Pulaski, which goes by the Spikings Farm Park. “There’s easy access to Interstate 94 and Interstate 90,” says Tregoning. "It’s walkable to public transportation via bus, Blue Line train, and Metra.” The Mayfair Metra stop sits along Montrose Ave; it’s a 30-minute train ride to Chicago Union Station. The Montrose subway stop on the Blue Line can get locals to O’Hare Airport and Forest Park.
Sing along at Sidekicks Entertainment Lounge
At the Korean restaurant Ssyal, some neighborhood favorites are dishes like whole Cornish hen cooked in ginseng. Old Irving Brewery serves up ales with playful names in a warehouse setting with cornhole games. “Old Irving Brewing has done well,” says Tregoning. “There are some classic old Chicago bars over there. There’s a karaoke bar, Sidekicks, right across from Old Irving.” Sidekicks has been a neighborhood staple for years, offering karaoke until 4 a.m. and pub food. Grocery essentials can be grabbed along Pulaski Road and Foster Ave, where there’s a Jewel-Osco and ALDI.
