Living in Pullman's historic Georgian rowhomes
Pullman’s residential areas are split between history and modern developments. “You’ll see that there’s a lot more historic value on the south end rather than the north end,” says Norton-Brown. Pullman’s historic district showcases red brick Georgian rowhomes, sitting along streets shaded by mature trees. Steps lead up from the sidewalk to the front doors, with two homes typically sharing one stoop. Front yards are small here and typically feature small flower gardens, but exterior personalization is limited here. “People have to keep the historic value. There’s certain aesthetics that have to be maintained for the homes,” Norton-Brown says. “You have to have a certain type of window and colors, like wintergreen or a rust-red type color.” Historic homes typically list between $125,000 and $200,000. On the north end of the neighborhood, people can find more brick and siding bungalows dating back to the 1940s and 50s. Streets on the north side feel more open, with fewer trees and fewer plants in lawns. The houses here list between $200,000 and $250,000.National parks and indoor athletic facilities around Pullman
Pullman’s parks and recreational spaces are split between historical sites and modern athletic complexes. At Pullman National Historic Park, people can explore the history of the neighborhood’s namesake through the sleeper car workshop or the administrative building with its iconic clock tower. On nice days, people can stroll through the workers’ gardens at Arcade Park. On the other side of town, Dr. Conrad Worrill Track and Field Center at Gately Park offers an indoor 200-meter track and hosts basketball and volleyball leagues. Also called Pullman Omniplex Stadium, Pullman Community Center is another indoor athletic haven. “It has baseball, basketball, and football all in the same center,” Norton-Brown says. “No matter what temperature it is outside, you can play inside.”Students study technology at Corliss High School
From kindergarten through eighth grade, students can attend George M. Pullman Elementary School, which receives a C from Niche. With a D-plus from Niche, Corliss High School offers early college pathways in IT web development and network technology so students can work toward their associates degree in high school. The high school also shares its campus with Butler College Preparatory High School, which receives a C-plus from Niche.Historic garden and railcar tours occur annually in Pullman
With so many historical organizations throughout Pullman, many of the annual traditions focus on celebrating the community’s history. Pullman Historic Foundation hosts Pullman Railroad Days in June, inviting visitors to explore different historic railcars. The Historic Pullman Garden Club offers a Historic Pullman Annual Garden Walk with guided and self-guided tours through community and private gardens around Pullman.Take the Metrarail into downtown Chicago
Pullman’s many train stations almost feel like history and modernity coming together. The community sits along the Metrarail’s ME line and features four stops residents can use to travel the 15 miles to downtown Chicago. Those who prefer driving can also take I-94, also called the Bishop Ford freeway, when commuting downtown. This motorway also connects people in Pullman to Chicago Midway International Airport, just over 14.5 miles away. When in need of medical attention, Advocate Trinity Hospital is 2.6 miles away.Pullman's local eateries along 111th Street
Pullman’s local restaurants and eateries are more sparse than Rosemoor next door, but residents can find places to stop along 111th Street, like Pullman Club Coffee, which invites people for a pick-me-up before exploring the historic district. They also serve Old Fashioned Donuts, a locally-owned Rosemoor joint that has been serving fresh donuts for over 50 years. Another Pullman staple along 111th is Lexington Betty Smokehouse, which features Chicago-style BBQ with specialties like brisket and wagyu steak dogs. Just north along Doty Avenue, people can shop at the Walmart Supercenter. The nearest Jewel-Osco is 1.7 miles away along 95th Street.
