About Chillum, MD

About Chillum, MD

Hyattsville community just minutes from D.C.

Chillum brings all the character of the Hyattsville area to a community filled with parks and green spaces. Many apartment complexes, multifamily buildings and single-family homes are grouped around public parks and recreation centers. Colonials, Cape Cods, split-level and simple ranch-style houses built from the 1950s to 1970s fill subdivisions. “It’s a hotbed for first-time homebuyers and investment homes,” says Terry Catalano of ReMax Leading Edge. She has sold homes in the area for nearly 30 years.

Moderate-sized homes attract buyers

Moderately sized houses and yards don’t stop residents from being creative with landscaping and personal touches that can show off the community's green side and the homeowner’s personality. Parks are within walking distance and main thoroughfares like Chillum Road are lined with sidewalks and a paved bike path. Housing prices range from $125,000 to $646,000. Townhouses and modern row houses near Hyattsville cost at least $500,000. Most single-family three- or four-bedroom homes go on the market for roughly $450,000. “Basements used to get flooded often up until the late 1970s,” Catalano says. “It has since been fixed.”

Local eateries bring international flair

Independent and international restaurants provide Chillum with a local food scene that draws residents from Hyattsville and D.C. Food trucks complement sit-down and eat-in restaurants. Leyla's Restaurant & Lounge Latin, known for its American huevos rancheros, and Pupersia Emily, with its rich pupusas and enchiladas. MidAtlantic Seafood Bar and Grill dishes out seafood plates, po’boy sandwiches and chicken wings from its down-home style eatery. And for sweets, Dulce Vida Bakery elevates pan de luce and sweet breads to a decadent level. The amount of shopping centers and retail centers almost rivals the selection of parks. Sargent Road Shopping Center has a Sav-A-Lot discount grocery store. Takoma Park Shopping Mall is home to Lidl and big-box auto retailers like Autozone. And the Mall at Prince George’s is less than 3 miles away.
