Small-town comfort and stability 30 miles from Columbus
Circleville gets its name from its original Native American circular urban design, whose center was the spot where the courthouse sits today. The city’s water tower, painted like a pumpkin, can be seen as a callback to the native affinity for the circle. Today’s 14,000 residents only know the city’s grid-based design, which has existed since the mid-19th century. Here, they enjoy quiet, small-town living east of the Scioto River, where big-city offerings can be found 30 miles south in Columbus. “Many enjoy the stability of the community and the ability to put down roots in a place where they feel a sense of ownership and connection. People appreciate the slower pace of life, and once they settle in, the idea of raising kids in a close-knit community or retiring in a peaceful, low-stress environment can be very appealing. It’s ideal for those who value community, space, and simplicity over fast-paced living,” says Dawnette Johnston, a Realtor with Howard Hanna Real Estate Services.
The economy remains stable, manufacturing and healthcare jobs are plentiful, with top employers like Sofidel Group, PPG, DuPont, and OhioHealth.

Downtown area offers dining, boutiques and gift shops
“Circleville’s downtown has several small, locally-owned shops, offering everything from home décor to clothes, gifts, and crafts. It’s a good place to spend an afternoon exploring and picking up something special,” Johnston says. Some cute shops include Betsey’s Boutique, Chic Rose Boutique, Christopher’s Boutique and Wittich’s Candy Shop, which has been selling candy here since 1840. The shop’s website says it’s the oldest family-owned and operated confectionery in the U.S.

That affection peaks during the Circleville Pumpkin Show in October when the city blocks off the streets for food trucks, a carnival and parades. The winner of the largest pumpkin contest in 2024 tipped the scales at over a metric ton. “Thousands of visitors come to this event from all over the country. It’s massive,” Ashley VanCleve, a Realtor with e-Merge.com, says.

The average summer high is 86. The average winter low temperature is 21, with an average of just over two feet of snow. But these are just averages. “It’s unpredictable. This is Ohio. One week it’s cold, and the next week it’s hot. There’s at least one tornado that goes through here every summer,” VanCleve says.
In the past decade, violent crime reports peaked in 2017 and dropped to a low in 2021, rising slightly through 2023. Property crime reports are half of what they were during a 2015 peak.
