Claremont Village enclave with an East Coast academia vibe
Old Claremont is a residential pocket of Claremont Village, sitting a few blocks north of the Village’s downtown. While the persistent sunshine and midcentury modern homes are Southern California staples, the neighborhood’s tree-lined streets and proximity to the Claremont Colleges provide a setting that’s hard to find in this part of the country. “We get a halo effect from the colleges that creates an old college town vibe that you could normally only find on the East Coast,” says Realtor Joseph Porreca with Concierge Realty Group, who’s a longtime Claremont resident. The Claremont Colleges are a consortium of seven institutions that share a collective campus a few blocks east of the neighborhood. “The setting attracts professors from prestigious New England schools and academic types that appreciate the importance of the arts and education here,” says Porreca. The neighborhood streets are even named after historic institutions, such as Oxford Avenue and Cambridge Avenue. Residents can follow these streets from their residential enclave to art museums, restaurants and specialty shops in Claremont Village’s historic downtown.

A-rated schools and the Claremont Colleges
Education is a big point of pride in Claremont. The city is home to top-ranked public schools and seven stellar colleges. The Claremont Unified School District serves the neighborhood, receiving an overall A rating from Niche. Students begin at Sycamore Elementary, graded an A. They continue at El Roble Intermediate School for seventh and eighth grade, which gets an A-minus. Claremont High rounds out the academic journey, earning an A for its rigorous International Baccalaureate program.
Claremont’s seven colleges are known as the Claremont Colleges. The group consists of five undergraduate colleges and two graduate schools. Among them are schools like Scripps College, a prestigious women’s college that opened in 1926. They share one contiguous campus a few blocks east of the neighborhood, creating a grand complex of higher education. Aside from a few shared facilities, each school is its own institution with its own quads, dorms and academic halls.

Tree-lined streets and midcentury modern homes
In Claremont Village, there’s the residential Village and the downtown Village. Old Claremont is the residential Village. Like most Claremont Village neighborhoods, greenery is a defining characteristic. Homes sit on spacious grassy lots full of flourishing trees that provide ample shade and privacy. Many also have added curb appeal from decorative front yard gardens. While midcentury modern and ranch-style homes are prevalent, the neighborhood presents a variety of architecture. “It’s the original residential neighborhood in Claremont, so tract homes weren’t even a thing,” says Porreca. “While you’re walking, you’ll see a 1920s Spanish Revival, then a 1950s ranch-style, then a 1910s Craftsman.” Midsize ranch-style and midcentury modern homes can range from $1 million to $1.5 million. More spacious midcentury modern designs and large Craftsman homes can cost $1.5 million to almost $2 million. Many of these early-1900s homes sit along North Indian Hills Boulevard, which is part of the annual Fourth of July parade route.

Wildfires in Angeles National Forest
Wildfires are a recurring threat in the Angeles National Forest and San Gabriel Mountains north of the city. The most recent was the Bridge Fire in the fall of 2024, which burned almost 60,000 acres across the heavily wooded hills. Downtown neighborhoods, like Old Claremont, aren’t at a great risk of being burnt, but air pollution from heavy amounts of smoke and ash can still affect residents. No matter the risk, it’s important for residents to have an evacuation plan prepared for the possibility of an encroaching fire.
