Old Claremont
Neighborhood in Claremont, California
Los Angeles County 91711
Tree-lined streets and midcentury modern homes
In Claremont Village, there’s the residential Village and the downtown Village. Old Claremont is the residential Village. Like most Claremont Village neighborhoods, greenery is a defining characteristic. Homes sit on spacious grassy lots full of flourishing trees that provide ample shade and privacy. Many also have added curb appeal from decorative front yard gardens. While midcentury modern and ranch-style homes are prevalent, the neighborhood presents a variety of architecture. “It’s the original residential neighborhood in Claremont, so tract homes weren’t even a thing,” says Porreca. “While you’re walking, you’ll see a 1920s Spanish Revival, then a 1950s ranch-style, then a 1910s Craftsman.” Midsize ranch-style and midcentury modern homes can range from $1 million to $1.5 million. More spacious midcentury modern designs and large Craftsman homes can cost $1.5 million to almost $2 million. Many of these early-1900s homes sit along North Indian Hills Boulevard, which is part of the annual Fourth of July parade route.Arts and dining in downtown Claremont Village
Claremont Village’s downtown is a few blocks down North Indian Hill Boulevard. Tree-lined sidewalks make this old-fashioned town center completely walkable. Its historic buildings now house locally owned restaurants, boutiques and museums. Bardot is a popular eatery serving fresh Californian fare, while Crème Bakery around the corner offers French pastries. There are even artisan cheesemongers like Cheese Cave, selling a selection of cheeses and culinary delicacies from around the globe. Beyond dining, the Village has boutique shops, like Maison Garrison and Sharon’s Shop. A few steps away, the Benton Museum of Art curates world-class exhibits. Artistic collections can be viewed closer to home at the Petterson Museum of Intercultural Art on the neighborhood’s south side. Weekly essentials are also nearby, with Trader Joe's and Sprouts Farmers Market sitting just across Route 66 on the neighborhood's north side.A-rated schools and the Claremont Colleges
Education is a big point of pride in Claremont. The city is home to top-ranked public schools and seven stellar colleges. The Claremont Unified School District serves the neighborhood, receiving an overall A rating from Niche. Students begin at Sycamore Elementary, graded an A. They continue at El Roble Intermediate School for seventh and eighth grade, which gets an A-minus. Claremont High rounds out the academic journey, earning an A for its rigorous International Baccalaureate program.Claremont’s seven colleges are known as the Claremont Colleges. The group consists of five undergraduate colleges and two graduate schools. Among them are schools like Scripps College, a prestigious women’s college that opened in 1926. They share one contiguous campus a few blocks east of the neighborhood, creating a grand complex of higher education. Aside from a few shared facilities, each school is its own institution with its own quads, dorms and academic halls.
Work in higher education or drive to Los Angeles
Old Claremont is an ideal spot for those working in higher education, with the seven Claremont Colleges just east of the neighborhood. Professors, faculty and staff can walk a few blocks along the tree-lined streets to the large collective campus. They can also take the bus on Historic Route 66, which runs along the neighborhood’s north side. Healthcare personnel can drive 3 miles south to Montclair Hospital, or 3 miles southwest to Pomona Valley Hospital. Interstate 10 is a couple of miles south of the neighborhood. Commuters can take it just over 30 miles west to downtown Los Angeles, or just under 30 miles southeast to Riverside. Ontario International Airport — located in Ontario, California, not the Canadian province — is the nearest commercial airport, about 10 miles southeast.Wildfires in Angeles National Forest
Wildfires are a recurring threat in the Angeles National Forest and San Gabriel Mountains north of the city. The most recent was the Bridge Fire in the fall of 2024, which burned almost 60,000 acres across the heavily wooded hills. Downtown neighborhoods, like Old Claremont, aren’t at a great risk of being burnt, but air pollution from heavy amounts of smoke and ash can still affect residents. No matter the risk, it’s important for residents to have an evacuation plan prepared for the possibility of an encroaching fire.Memorial Park and hiking in the San Gabriel Mountains
Memorial Park is the nearest community green space, sitting on the neighborhood’s east side. It offers open lawn space, playgrounds, athletic courts and a shady picnic area. Residents also commonly extend their morning and afternoon walks around the Claremont Colleges campus. Trailheads leading into the San Gabriel Mountains begin just 2 miles north of the neighborhood. Live Oak Canyon is the closest hiking spot, offering easy walking trails. Serious hikers can follow these trails farther into the mountains and Angeles National Forest.
