Just a short distance from the Vermont border and the Connecticut River is the historic mill city of Claremont. This community has a population of about 13,000 people and has grown in popularity in recent years, most particularly among those who work from home. Residents here have access to a downtown area, as well as outdoor recreation. “We are a fantastically located community that has a small rural community feel while still having larger city amenities like our own police force and shopping areas,” says Eylse Crossman, the executive director of the Greater Claremont Chamber of Commerce who has lived in the area for almost her entire life.
Repurposed mills and spread-out farmhouses
The area's median housing price is around $275,000, which is lower than the U.S. median. Prospective buyers will find homes built around 2020 as well as repurposed mill buildings that were constructed in the 1830s. The West Side neighborhood contains more Victorian homes and Cape Cods, while the South End community has more spread-out farmhouses and rural properties.
Trails and recreation for all four seasons
Claremont’s recreation options are a big part of the community’s draw. Arrowhead Recreation Area has become a four-season spot, with mountain bike races and hiking in the summer and snow tubing and skiing in the winter. Walking trails of all skill levels can be found alongside the playset and picnic areas at Moody Park. Crossman also notes that residents have access to rail trails and over 100 miles of mountain biking trails within a short drive of downtown.
Claremont School District
Students here are served by the Claremont School District, which receives an overall C-minus rating on Niche. Students can start at Bluff Elementary School before heading to Claremont Middle School. The final stop for many is Stevens High School, and all three schools earn a C rating.
Alumni associations and Brewfest
One of the community’s most noteworthy events is the Stevens High School Alumni Association Parade on the second Saturday in June. Part of the oldest continuously active alumni association in the country, hundreds of residents participate through themed floats and marching bands. In September, the community comes together for Claremont Brewfest, which has almost 40 different breweries and cideries offering appetizers, drinks and live music. “There are so many local breweries that it is almost impossible to try all the beers in one day,” Crossman says.
Major roads to Upper Valley employer
Education and healthcare are Claremont's major industries. Residents can use the many major roads that cross through the city to get to nearby communities like Lebanon or Hanover. The city is known to be more car-friendly, and U.S. Route 120 and Interstate 91 are the primary roads for daily trips and commutes. Valley Regional Hospital is located in the North End community, but residents can also head up to the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center 25 miles away. Burlington International Airport is 111 miles away in Vermont.
Downtown dining and Washington Street shopping
Downtown Claremont is home to most of the dining options for residents. Ramunto's Brick Oven Pizza serves single slices and specialty pies, and CrowBar Hardware Store is a speakeasy-style eatery. Leo's One-Stop Market sells deli meats and sandwiches, and Crossman says they have some of the best baked beans and homemade potato salad in the area. Most shopping options are available in the Claremont Plaza Shopping Center in the Washington Street District neighborhood, including Hannaford and Walmart.
