Hidden views of Old Tampa Bay

Bay Aristocrat Village trades in views of green lawns for the sparkling waters of Old Tampa Bay. Unlike many bayfront neighborhoods, which have luxury condos and estates, this 55-plus community offers manufactured homes. “What a uniquely Florida experience,” says Brian Walsh, a Realtor with SkyCoast Realty Group. “It’s mobile homes right on the water. They have their own docks and everything.” It’s not unusual for manatees and dolphins to swim up for a visit. Bay Aristocrat Village is also close to a major throughway and still feels secluded. “People don’t know this is here,” Walsh says. “They’re driving on U.S. Highway 19 and only see offices and car dealerships. It’s practically hidden.”

Two-bedroom mobile homes and club amenities

Rows of modular housing sit on this rectangular finger, dredged in the 1950s to fit side-by-side on four streets. Most residents in Bay Aristocrat Village are renters, with roughly 40 percent being homeowners. To deter short-term rentals, properties must be rented for at least three months. Prices for those purchasing a residence start at $140,000 and can exceed $200,000 for properties with over 1,000 square feet. The neighborhood has a clubhouse, which is where many of the community’s dances and dinners are held. It also has free WiFi, a pool and hot tub, a game room and a library. Two fishing piers and a launch for kayaks and boats allow residents to take advantage of their waterfront real estate.

Biking across the Courtney Campbell Causeway

Off Belleair Road is Eagle Lake Park, frequented by families at the playground, joggers on trails and four-legged companions at the dog park. For a day at the beach, Clearwater’s white sand is within 9 miles of Bay Aristocrat Village. Cyclists hit the Courtney Campbell Causeway, riding by those fishing or taking pictures of the sunset. “I hear a lot about people taking the causeway to spend the day at Ben T. Davis Beach, which is on the Tampa side,” Walsh says. Just south of Bay Aristocrat Village is Cove Cay Golf Club, a semi-private USGA-rated 18-hole golf course with a pro shop and a restaurant.

Breakfast at Chez David before hitting Clearwater Mall

While larger shopping centers like Clearwater and Countryside are within 7 miles, Walsh says that little pockets of shops and local joints, insulated by houses, are just as nice. “There is this kind of cute, little downtown area on Nursery and Belcher [roads]. It’s away from everything, but you can literally walk or bike there.” Olga’s Restaurant and Chez David both serve breakfast. Those wanting a classic diner experience got to Olga’s. Chez David is a French café offering flaky croissants, rich crepes and macarons. “There’s also Copper Mug,” Walsh adds. “It’s a divey, smokey pub. You look at the menu, and then they bring out a package of liquor you can take to go. It’s popping on the weekends.” The smell of hoagies and hand-tossed pies comes from Monty’s Pizzeria across the street. Next door, locals can stock up on veggies at John’s Fresh Produce Market.

Weekly sports leagues and JRs’ Friday Fest

Bay Aristocrat Village offers a catalog of activities to choose from. For the athletes, there are bowling, golf and shuffleboard clubs that meet up weekly. Bay Aristocrat Village also has a social club, which hosts line dancing and other fitness classes. The club also has men, women, chorus and chess groups. The Art Guild has its own studio for pottery and other creative pursuits.
Aside from Clearwater and St. Pete’s larger, more well-known festivals, there are a few closer to home that locals frequent. “JRs Sports Pub is really unassuming because you have this bar that has bike nights and karaoke, but they also have a family-friendly festival every Friday in the parking lot,” Walsh says. “There are food trucks, vendors and bounce houses for the kids.”

Getting in and around Bay Aristocrat Village

Golf carts aren’t unusual in Bay Aristocrat Village, but most get around town by car. U.S. Highway 19 is a major throughway near Bay Aristocrat Village, lined by dealerships and bus stops operated by Pinellas County Authority Transit. Courtney Campbell Causeway or Interstate 275 can be taken to reach Tampa, 20 miles east over the bay. Visitors and locals can take the Jolley Trolley as far north as Tarpon Springs. The Clearwater trolley stop is about 6 miles west on South Myrtle Avenue. For extended travel, St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport is within a 5-mile drive.
