Once John Adams College & Career Academy opened its doors in 2006, it drew new attention to the Corlett neighborhood. The high school opened as a reinvestment from the city after originally closing due to funding issues. “Unfortunately, there is not a lot of investment in Cleveland neighborhoods. The only recent significant public investment was the new high school, which is a pretty big deal when it comes to any neighborhood,” said Terry Metter, a librarian at the Cleveland Public Library. Following the school’s opening, Cleveland's revitalization efforts in Corlett included developing a shopping plaza on Miles Avenue and improving the streetscape at the East 131st Street and Miles Avenue intersection, home to businesses such as Dollar General and Herb’s Caine Tavern, a neighborhood bar.
There is value in buying, not renting
Colonial Revival homes in need of renovation, along with private driveways and detached garages, characterize the housing stock in this neighborhood. Two-family homes with upper-level living spaces are also common, and 60% of residents are homeowners. Home prices generally stay below $150,000, with many under $100,000. Low home prices make buying a more favorable option than renting, particularly given Cleveland's rising rent costs. “There is plenty of long-term investment opportunity here. You can also significantly reduce your housing costs by buying—it’s much more favorable than renting, especially when considering tax benefits,” said Michael Ferrante, a realtor with Century 21 Homestar.

The brand new John Adams College and Career Academy
After John Adams High School came online as John Adams College and Career Academy in 2006, Corlett got some attention. The public school is the alma mater of Nick Mileti, former owner of professional basketball and baseball teams in Cleveland. Mileti loved his time in high school so much that he purposefully reused the school colors of wine and gold for the Cleveland Cavaliers. John Adams focuses on bolstering an active community spirit through events like Trunk or Treat — a version of trick-or-treat where neighbors gather in their vehicles, and kids move from car to car rather than house to house. John Adams also celebrates Thanksgiving. The school offers a neighborhood-wide dinner for the November holiday. Academically, kids can choose from a variety of career and educational pathways. John Adams has a C-minus rating from Niche, as do other nearby schools like Charles Dickens School and Robert H. Jamison Leadership Academy.
