More housing coming to Mount Pleasant
Neighborhood streets feature bungalows, Colonial Revivals and Foursquares from the 1900s to the 1940s, many with detached garages accessible through private driveways. Oftentimes, it is these paved driveways that separate houses from one another, with functional green space limited to modest backyards. Duplexes are common, with dual front entry doors or a side door, and a second, covered porch situated above the first. Prices typically range between $25,000 and $150,000. Many homes require some upkeep before move in, which attracts investors. Mount Pleasant is "part of an up-and-coming revitalization area and well known to investors worldwide,” says Leilani Bowersock, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Schmidt Realty who has sold many homes in the neighborhood.Cuyahoga County Land Bank Charities, in partnership with Habitat for Humanity and the St. Luke’s Foundation, has plans to build or rehabilitate hundreds of homes in Mount Pleasant. The project aims to complete 15 Mount Pleasant homes within the next few years.
Community members engage through houses of worship
The neighborhood has a plethora of houses of worship that engage the community year-round. These include Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, which hosts events such as a Mother’s Day luncheon and a Community Day in August with a bounce house, music and school backpack giveaways.Mount Pleasant is a hub for barbecue
Mount Pleasant has numerous barbecue restaurants. Mt. Pleasant Bar-B-Q is a no-frills spot on the corner of Kinsman and 128th cooking up ribs and pigs' feet. Just a block down 128th, residents can find The Best Thing Smokin BBQ, with wings, rib dinners and sandwiches available for takeout. Closer to the Shaker Heights side of Mount Pleasant, W Bar & Grill serves barbecue staples along with tacos and flatbread pizzas. Aside from barbecue, there's also Samone's Kitchen. Their hefty breakfast menu includes sandwiches with bacon, egg and cheese between slices of French toast. Locals stop by CMB Soul Food for potatoes loaded with meats, cheeses and veggies and "ova loaded fries."The neighborhood has a Save A Lot for grocery runs, and Aldi is also nearby. In 2024, the local CVS pharmacy closed, prompting a wave of community organizing, as the area already has limited essential resources. Members of the community lobbied CVS to keep the location open, though the store ultimately shuttered.
Swimming at Glendale Park
"Mount Pleasant is a great area," Bowersock says. People here enjoy access to local parks and recreation centers, including Glendale Park, a neighborhood green space with basketball courts and a swimming pool. Alexander Hamilton Recreation Center has an indoor pool and offers classes in chess, karate and basketball. Luke Easter Park is also nearby, a sprawling community space with a baseball field, playground, public pool and roller-skating rink. The park hosts an annual Labor Day parade and festival.The Mount Pleasant branch of the Cleveland Public Library is a community gathering spot located inside a 19th century former bank building. Patrons of all ages take advantage of the library's offerings and events, from LegalWorks sessions providing legal consultation to a Blackout Poetry Workshop that teaches attendees how to use a permanent marker to transform old print media into fresh, original poems.
College prep at John F. Kennedy High
Cleveland Metropolitan School District offers school choice. Within the neighborhood, students can start at Andrew J. Rickoff School, which serves kindergarten through eighth grade has a C-minus from Niche. Teens may attend John F. Kennedy High School, which also has a C-minus. The school offers college preparatory curriculum in partnership with Cleveland State University, and career technical pathways in manufacturing, welding and more.Downtown Cleveland 6 miles away
People generally rely on cars to get around here. Kinsman Road is the major throughfare here, connecting to downtown Cleveland 6 miles away. Shaker Boulevard runs just north of the neighborhood.
