From a mill town to a trendy neighborhood near downtown
Founded as its own municipality, Ohio City has been a vibrant cultural center of Cleveland since it was annexed in the 1850s. Historically, the riverbend neighborhood was an economic powerhouse, where immigrants came to work in its mills and distilleries. Today, it’s a trendy neighborhood with brightly colored public art, bicycle trails and health food restaurants, known for its walkability and still-present historic character. “Ohio City is close to downtown, and there’s a lot of nightlife, shopping and restaurants,” says Ericka Bazzo, a Realtor with On Target Realty, who has been selling homes in the area for over 12 years. “It tends to be the midpoint between the east and west side, making it convenient for someone who works anywhere in Cleveland.”
Many young families call Ohio City their home.

West Side Market and other amenities
The historic center of Ohio City is the West Side Market, the oldest continually operating municipal public market in Cleveland. The market, which is more than 100 years old, was designated one of the “10 Great Public Places in America” by the American Planning Association in 2008. Vendors sell cheese, fresh pasta, cupcakes and mangoes underneath a 44-ft. Guastavino tile vaulted ceiling, which gives the market a palatial feel. “West Side Market is a longstanding icon and hub of Ohio City,” says Bazzo. “They’ve developed all of the surrounding area there and keep moving further out.”
The heart of Ohio City is West 25th Street, a walkable commercial thoroughfare. People order homemade frozen desserts at Mitchell’s Ice Cream inside a converted theater. They drink flights of beer at Great Lakes Brewing Co. and sip smoothies while playing board games at Table Top Board Game Café. Neighbors can stock up on groceries at Dave’s, a local chain with 12 locations across northern Ohio.
