Clever is a rural bedroom community south of Springfield
Clever, Missouri, is a small but heavily residential city surrounded by gently rolling farmland and grazing cattle. Clever is among a string of places drawing those looking to escape some of Springfield’s crowds. Clever is home to just over 3,000 people, roughly triple the count at the start of the 21st century. “Clever’s a very rural community. As Springfield has grown, people have moved to Republic and Nixa, and Clever would be right between those and kind of right in the path of growth,” says Thomas Kissee, broker and owner of Tom Kissee Real Estate Company. “I think it’s just the rural feeling you get there. You’re out in the country, yet still very convenient to Springfield. It’s a bedroom community, no doubt.”

City has many modern homes in subdivisions
Homes in Clever are in a few dense subdivisions. “It’s very clean and very well kept,” Kissee says. “How people care for their property around there is very attractive.” While the city has some homes from the mid- to late 20th century, many were built between the 2000s and today. Houses here include many brick and vinyl ranch-style and New Traditional homes. Depending on house size and acreage, most homes in the city go from $140,000 to $380,000. Homes on the spacious farmland run between $400,000 and $650,000, but a few there are under that range. Depending on where they live, some residents may also pay homeowners association fees of less than $10.

Clever offers casual dining and frozen desserts
The city has a few casual dining options. They include Chinese takeout at the Lucky Panda and various comfort foods at Phat Boys Grill. Phat Boys’ options include biscuit bowls, sandwiches, pizza and smoked meats. Blue Jay Scoops serves frozen treats, including ice cream, shakes and sundaes. The dessert shop also makes cakes, some of which are from special orders. While Clever has Apple Market, nearby cities offer more options. For example, Republic has a commercial corridor with chains like Walmart and ALDI.

Clever district is planning school expansions
The city is home to Clever R-V School District, which receives a B-minus from Niche. The district has two schools, Clever EleMiddle and Clever R-V High School, which both get B-minus grades. Clever EleMiddle serves students from prekindergarten to eighth grade. In late 2024, the district began projects to upgrade some of the high school’s classrooms and sports facilities and improve security at Clever EleMiddle. The high school's athletics include a softball squad that won a district title in 2025. “I think they’re still a small class [district], and people like that,” Kissee says. “I think they’ve been very progressive with good academics and sports.”
After finishing up at Clever Elementary students go on to attend Clever High School.

Local outdoor options include city park and golf
Clever City Park is Clever’s main recreational space. The park has a playground with slides, swingsets, jungle gyms and seesaws. There is also a basketball court and a pavilion for gatherings. Located less than 5 miles north of the city, Island Green Golf Club offers more recreation for the area. The public club has a rolling, 18-hole course with several patches of trees. Clever is also less than 1 hour north of Table Rock Lake, an Ozarks destination popular for its waterfront resorts, fishing and boating.

Annual events include Clever Freedom Celebration
Local events include the annual Clever Freedom Celebration, an Independence Day-themed festivity that usually occurs at the end of June. Many come out to Clever High’s grounds each year to try food truck fare and watch fireworks. Usual food options include barbecue, fried fish and frozen treats.
City has access Missouri Route 14 and State Highway P
Commuters here may directly access Missouri Route 14 and State Highway P, which go to nearby cities like Billings, Republic and Nixa. Clever is less than 10 miles south of Republic, where commuters may get on U.S. Highway 60 to go to Springfield. Many in Clever may go to Springfield for medical care or to catch commercial flights. Located about 20 miles north of Clever, Springfield is home to places like Springfield-Branson National Airport and Mercy Hospital Springfield.
Region may receive tornadoes
While several tornadoes passed near the Springfield area in 2024, they were mainly weak to moderate ones. Clever’s schools have some federally designated shelters to protect students and staff.
