Founded in 1869 by Colonel James Coffey as an Indian trading post, Coffeyville retains its slow-paced and easygoing lifestyle. Carla LeLaCheur, broker of American Homes Realty, and a lifelong native of Coffeyville since 1959, says, “I’ve stayed here because of the people. You know if you get a flat tire, someone driving by will help you.” Coffeyville is located in Southeast Kansas by the Verdigris River, just 2 miles north of Oklahoma. “Most people think of Kansas as flat, and that’s what they expect when they move here,” says LeLaCheur, “But they’re always surprised because we have a lot of rolling hills. It looks more like Arkansas.” The city was in its heyday between 1940 and 1960, when its population was over 17,000. As industries changed and oil production dropped, so did the population, which is now less than 9,000. Still, oil plays a significant role in the city’s economy, along with other industries. Coffeyville’s small-town vibe can be experienced at the local shops and restaurants downtown, an area the city is working to redevelop, and during community events that bring people together for drinks and rodeos.

Coffeyville has a few national retailers, including Walmart, Family Dollar and Dollar Tree. Despite some vacant buildings, there are several local shops and restaurants downtown. “We’re like most towns, where once the big-box stores come, they redirect the traffic,” says LeLaCheur, “But our city and the Chamber of Commerce are very proactive in programs to help business owners be successful and to attract new small businesses.” Many businesses give Coffeyville an old-time feel, such as Sunflower Soda Fountain, and Isham’s Hardware, the oldest hardware store in Kansas, serving the community since 1870.
