Cohoctah Township offers a country lifestyle, just outside Howell
Equestrian and livestock farms blanket Cohoctah Township, a southeastern Michigan community with a population of just over 3,200, according to the 2020 U.S. Census. Residents in the area are largely car dependent, as it is dominated by farmland. Retail and restaurants are in nearby communities. “It’s a rural area north of Howell […] There is a gas station, an antique store and a post office. That’s it,” says Laura Toms, a Realtor with Century 21 Affiliated, who has over four decades of experience. “It’s just a peaceful, country setting.”
Equestrian arenas, natural recreation and public golf courses
Cohoctah Township Park’s equestrian arenas are open to the public from April 1 to October 31. The facility also hosts 4-H events. The area features various state-owned huntable lands, such as the Oak Grove State Game Area. About 10 miles away, over 1 mile of trail winds through Lutz County Park. The 100-acre park features signage that shares information about the natural habitat and the wildlife that inhabit it. The Hunters Ridge and Hawk Meadows golf courses are in the region, and both are public 18-hole courses.
Homes varying from farmhouse to ranch-style on sprawling properties
Many homes are set back from the main road, and some have unpaved driveways. “It’s a real mixture,” Toms says, regarding the architectural variety. “There are old historic farmhouses, new houses and every kind of variety. Not all come with acreage.” Ranch-style homes and Tudor-influenced houses are common on properties that exceed 10 acres. Home prices range from approximately $180,000 to $610,000, depending on factors such as property size.
Antique shopping, Howell’s downtown and dining in Fowlerville
Bain’s Unique Antiques is on Cohoctah Road. About 12 miles away, Howell’s walkable downtown is home to bars, Diamonds Steak & Seafood and Cello Italian Restaurant. Local shops include Burgs on Main, a men's clothing store, and Alyssum Patch Contemporary Quilt Shop. Many grocery stores are near downtown Howell too, including Kroger and Joanna’s Market. Fowlerville is another nearby community, and it has the Bloated Goat Saloon, which serves American pub fare.
Cohoctah Township celebrates Independence Day with a patriotic parade
Cohoctah Township hosts a Fourth of July parade at the intersection of Cohoctah and Oak Grove roads. “They bill it as a parade so nice you see it twice. It goes one way and back the other on the main street in town,” Toms says. The patriotic festivities continue after the parade with pony rides, craft vendors and a silent auction.
Howell Public Schools serves the area and offers trades courses
Many students fall into the Howell Public Schools district attendance area. The district earns a B grade from Niche. Cohoctah Township is in the district’s northern region, which is zoned for the B-graded Voyager Elementary School and Highlander Way Middle School, which earns a B-minus. Howell High School scores a B and offers an award-winning building trades program and a firefighting program.
Some homes are zoned for the B-minus-rated Byron Area Schools district attendance boundary, and others are in the Fowlerville Community Schools district’s zoning area, which receives a C-plus.
Roads tie the area to Howell, a hospital and an international airport
Oak Grove Road connects the area to Howell, which includes the Trinity Health Livingston Hospital, the nearest urgent care facility. Train tracks also tie the area to Howell, and noise and traffic may occur near the tracks as freight trains pass. Fowlerville Road leads to Fowlerville’s downtown, about 15 miles away. Byron Road links Cohoctah Township to the Flint metropolitan area, which includes Bishop International Airport, a nearly 30-mile drive away.
