Columbia brings the past into the present

In the former gold rush boomtown of Columbia, the old way of life is still accessible through historic storefronts, the local museum and rides through town on the stagecoach. Residents take pride in the town's history, as does the state of California. Columbia's historic district was designated a state park in 1945 for its preservation. Commercial stops are locally owned, keeping with the independence of frontier origins. Some are housed in buildings that have changed ownership continuously since the gold rush era. The community is located off Highway 49 and is surrounded by other gold rush towns, including Sonora, Jamestown and Angels Camp, making it a pit stop for tourists seeking a taste of the Wild West. Located in Tuolumne County, Columbia meets the modern era through its Community College, arts scene and airport used by hobby pilots. Residents live near a major lake and trails leading to swimming caverns.

Art and history mingle in the downtown area

Downtown is a center for events. Some that feature historical reenactments include Miners Christmas in December and Back to School 1861 in September when children sit for lessons in the Old Columbia Schoolhouse taught by a teacher in period costume. September also brings the Columbia Art Show, where creatives display their work on the streets. "There is so much talent. Retired opera singers and ballerinas from San Francisco all move up here to the mountains," says Melanie Adair, a local Realtor who's lived in the county for more than 40 years and works for Friends Real Estate Services. Professional performances are hosted at the Sierra Rep's Fallon House Theatre. Stagecoaches take guests on short rides around town. "They have bandits that do a hold-up and take all your stuff, and by the time you get back, it's all back in the office," Adair says. The Columbia Museum is also downtown, consolidating local history.

Original mining cottages and country homes on acres

Housing is eclectic and pricing largely depends on quality and condition, according to Adair. "There might be a house built by the previous homeowners and their families over generations so beautifully. Or a real log cabin. There's a lot of those." She adds that some of the most coveted homes are the rustic cottages where miners once lived, located in Columbia's "big hill area," called this for its higher elevation. Columbia also has luxurious in traditional and mediterranean styles and simple two-story homes and ranch styles. Lots can be small or as large as 20 acres or more in the countryside. Price ranges are from around $135,000 to $474,000 but head into $520,000 to $1.3 million as condition and size increases. Columbia also has manufactured homes ranging from around $30,000 to $100,000 and townhouses from roughly $300,000 to $320,000.
