Midland is growing family-friendly community near Fort Benning

Midland is a rapidly growing community on the edge of Columbus that offers spacious properties and proximity to shopping, parks and highly rated schools. It’s bordered by Fort Benning, which makes it a popular place for military families to settle down. “I moved out here because I knew that the area was nice, I knew I was going to be able to get a little bit of land if I wanted it,” says Francesca Cable, a Midland resident and a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Kennon, Parker, Duncan and Davis. “You can be in a really nice neighborhood where your kids are going to be riding their bicycles up and down the street. There’s amazing trick-or-treating here… it’s like in the movies where there’s kids and parents walking around everywhere, there’s barely any cars down the street and lots of people have their houses decorated.” Midland Commons is a still-growing commercial area here that’s brought easy access to grocery stores, restaurants and entertainment. “When we bought our house here, all that stuff was woods,” Cable says. “Watching the Midland area grow over the past few years has been awesome.”

Subdivisions with ranch-style and New Traditional homes

Midland is a collection of suburban subdivisions, where the curving streets end in cul-de-sacs, and the homes have manicured lawns and paved driveways. More established subdivisions offer mostly brick ranch-style houses built between the 1950s and ‘80s, while newer subdivisions typically offer one- or two-story New Traditional houses. There are also some pockets of custom homes that can sit on several secluded acres. Most homes have less than 2,800 square feet and cost between $110,000 and $400,000. Larger homes can range from around $400,000 to $600,000, and some luxury and custom homes can cost between $600,000 and $1.1 million. “Homes, as long as they’re priced properly and are ready to be moved into, they’ll tend to go quicker in the Midland area than in overall Columbus,” Cable says. Some homes are available for rent, and there are apartment complexes concentrated around the U.S. Route 80 and Manchester Expressway interchange.

The Muscogee and Harris County school districts serve the area

Muscogee County School District serves most of the area and earns an overall rating of B from Niche, while Harris County School District serves the northern part of the community and earns an A-minus rating. Depending on where they live, kids in the Muscogee district might start at Mathews Elementary and then go to Aaron Cohn Middle; both earn an A-minus. They can then attend the C-plus-rated Shaw High, where they can enroll in the Mass Communication Academy, a magnet program with courses in broadcasting and marketing.

Midland Commons offers shopping, restaurants and entertainment

Midland Commons is the area’s main commercial hub. “There are a couple of really good restaurants and an outdoor entertainment area where, once a month, there’ll be a local band that plays. It’s a very family-friendly space,” Cable says. “It’s always hopping on the weekends.” She recommends Mabella, which is an Italian steakhouse, and Tommy G’s, which serves bar food and is known for its wall of self-serve beer taps. There are also retail stores here, including Woof Gang Bakery & Grooming, which sells dog-friendly baked goods. The outdoor space here includes a large lawn and stage, where there’s regular live music, movie nights and cornhole games. Publix anchors Midland Commons, and there’s a Walmart nearby for other shopping needs. From May through October, shoppers can get fresh produce from the Midland Community Farmers Market, held weekly at Midland Church.

Outdoor recreation at parks, a golf course and a public pool

There are several ways to get outside in and near Midland. Cable says the Psalmond Road Pool is a popular place for families to cool off from the Georgia heat. The pool is near the Psalmond Road Supercenter, which offers a playground, baseball fields and an indoor recreational space with a game room and gym. Also on Psalmond Road is the beginning of the Columbus Fall Line Trace, an over 10-mile paved path that leads from Midland to the city center and is used by cyclists and joggers. At the public Bull Creek Golf Course, golfers can play the 36-hole championship course, take lessons and practice at the driving range. Flat Rock Park is a green space that’s best known for its natural waterslide; the park also has a fishing pond, hiking trails and a disc golf course. Nearby, Ellerslie Park is home to a popular playground and an observation tower with views of the surrounding landscape.

Getting around Midland and Columbus

Route 80 and the Manchester Expressway are the main thoroughfares in Midland. Downtown Columbus is around 14 miles away via the Manchester Expressway, and Route 80 leads to Interstate 185, about 10 miles away. Fort Benning’s main entrance is a roughly 23-mile drive. The METRA Transit System has bus service around the city, and stops are concentrated near the Manchester Expressway and Route 80 interchange. For healthcare, Piedmont Columbus Regional’s Northside Campus and St. Francis Emory Healthcare are around 10 miles away. Columbus Airport is 9 miles away, and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is a 100-mile drive.

Proximity to Fort Benning means there might be noise

Fort Benning borders the community, making it convenient for service members to get to base but sometimes creating noise for residents. “The sound does travel, so there are definitely times where I can hear gunfire and cannons, but it’s nothing that is like, concerning of is it going to be reaching over here,” Cable says. ‘It’s off in the distance.”
