Affordable single-family housing
Arlington Park is a Columbus suburb mainly comprised of mid-20th-century homes. "The homebuyers often choose this place because they grew up in the neighborhood," says Realtor Janene Parham, who sells homes in Arlington Park with Red 1 Realty. "It also draws folks because it has a central location between employment in the downtown and the north side." Arlington Park is close to international cuisine, churches and a grocery store. Residents can walk to parks and schools, but there is also convenient access to public transportation. The Central Ohio Community Land Trust offers up to $50,000 in subsidies to those who qualify for loans in this neighborhood. "It's a great program that helps keep housing affordable," Parham says. "This is a close-knit community that's looking to rebuild the area and make it easier for folks to stay in their houses."

Bungalows, American Foursquares and Cape Cods
Most homes were built between the 1920s and '70s, so there's been enough time for mature trees to shade the neighborhood. Front porches are about 15 to 30 feet off the sidewalk-lined streets, and many of the lots are long and rectangular, so there is even more room in the backyards of most properties. Options include two-bedroom bungalows, wood-frame two-story houses, American Foursquares, ranch styles and Cape Cods. Organizations like Renew Homes Ohio and Habitat for Humanity work on rehabbing many of the neighborhood's houses. Arlington Park's single-family homes fall well below Columbus' median price. Most are priced from $100,000 to $200,000. The neighborhood also has apartment buildings from the 1970s and '90s.

Just off Woodland Avenue, the 6-acre Woodland Urban Farm is where chickens and goats roam free. Since the farm is larger than 5 acres and not within city limits, it’s not held to local regulations against agriculture, explains owner Wayne Shingler. He says he started the urban farm to serve as a model for other people so that they could sustainably grow food. The farm produces jam, honey and eggs, and children from nearby schools take field trips to the farm to learn about agriculture. "I mainly grow for my own family at this point. If I have a bumper crop of something, I'll sell it to a local farmers market," he says.
