Green spaces and renovated homes shape Deshler Park's atmosphere

About 4 miles from the heart of Columbus, Deshler Park is a neighborhood with plenty of outdoor recreation. Despite having the densely arranged lots and businesses you tend to see in urban areas, Deshler has green spaces throughout the community. Its streets are full of renovated homes, demonstrating the area's commitment to revitalization.

Older homes, midcentury styles and steady growth

Homes in the area were mostly constructed around the turn of the 20th century or during the midcentury period, which means many properties have needed updates over the years. Misty Linn, a real estate agent with Core Realty Collection, says that some of this work is well underway. “In the last two years, many homes have transitioned from vacant properties into rehabbed homes,” she says. Cape Cods and ranch-style homes are common, often featuring brick and stone facades. Single-car driveways and detached garages are typical and older sidewalks line Deshler, Frebis and Fairwood avenues. Prices range from the low $100,000s to the high $200,000s, depending on condition. Deshler Park’s median price is in the low $200,000s, which puts it above nearby neighborhoods like Innis Gardens Village, Edgewood and Vassor Village. That same price point makes it comparable to Driving Park and Milbrook, but lower than Karns Park. Lawrence Gohring, a broker with Veterans Plus Real Estate Advisors, describes the neighborhood as an up-and-comer. “It’s got a pretty stable growth to it. It’s a great place,” he says.

South High athletics stand out for Deshler Park students

Students in Deshler Park are zoned for Columbus City Schools, one of the largest school districts in the state. Older students might attend South High School, which has a strong athletics program. During the 2023–24 season, the boys basketball team went 14-0 in the City League South Division. This was the team's first undefeated division finish since 1944 and earned them a spot in the City League championship game. Other strong sports at South include baseball, football and track and field.

Columbus City Schools assigns students to a neighborhood school by address, but families can apply to magnet and alternative schools through a districtwide lottery, where placement depends on available seats and a random draw. The district also accepts some out-of-district students, though it's space-dependent and not guaranteed.
