Southeast Columbus suburban living

East Columbus-White Ash is a 15-mile swath of flat land with a few postwar subdivisions between large tracts of farmland. Areas like this, often called exurbs, are among the fastest-growing in the United States real estate market. This large neighborhood outside Columbus is just a few miles from Rickenbacker International Airport.

A series of subdivisions

The Blacklick Estates are the most prominent subdivision in East Columbus-White Ash. The locality is a census-designated place, with more than 9,000 residents living in a 3-square-mile network of winding streets and cul-de-sacs. Houses on these streets vary mainly between postwar split-levels, bungalows and ranch-style houses with three to four bedrooms and selling in a range from $200,000 to $350,000. Newer subdivisions of homes are being built on the outskirts of these older subdivisions, mostly 3,000-square-foot-plus neo-colonials on medium-sized lots listed for under $400,000. On the eastern side of this large neighborhood, in White Ash, there are a few sprawling ranch-style homes on lots up to 5 acres next to homes in more upscale subdivisions like the Courtyards at Lehman Park, selling for under $600,000.

30 minutes to Columbus along Route 33

East Columbus-White Ash is bordered by Interstate 70 to the north, which runs from Utah east through Ohio and terminates outside Baltimore, Maryland. On the southern side, Route 33, or the Southwest Expressway, runs northwest through Columbus. Commuters can reach downtown Columbus in under 30 minutes during rush hour. Residents can catch the number 5 bus of the Columbus Transportation Authority, or COTA, in the northwestern part of the neighborhood and arrive in Downtown Columbus in under an hour.

Public trails and nature preserves

In the 1,500-acre Walnut Woods Metro Park, the area's ubiquitous white ash trees crowd in dense forests of old-growth maple, pine and sweetgum trees. The vast green space has several miles of wilderness trails and opportunities for fishing and canoeing in Big Walnut Creek. There are many unofficial green spaces throughout this exurban neighborhood, but at 1,600 acres, Pickerington Ponds Metro Park is the largest. Over 20 miles of trails, including the 16-mile paved Blacklick Greenway Trail, plus a 420-acre nature preserve known as the site of an array of rare birdlife, make this metro park a destination for Columbusites all over.
