Harlem is known for low crime and well-ranked schools
East of the Hoover Reservoir, Harlem is a quiet, rural township made up of farmlands and undeveloped green space. It's known as a peaceful community with well-ranked schools and low crime. "It's quiet out here — everybody's really kind and laid back," says Adriana Stidham, Harlem resident and Realtor with Red 1 Realty. The CAP Index Crime Score lists Harlem at a 1 out of 10, the safest possible score. Though the area has flown under the radar for many years, that appears to be changing. "When the area was established, nobody wanted it," says Marty Ackermann, a broker with Re/Max consultant group who has lived there for over 50 years. "It was a diamond in the rough — a well-kept secret." In recent years, investors have been acquiring land and improving infrastructure, eager to develop Harlem into a tech-friendly community. "They're taking trees down, putting water and sewers in," says Ackermann. "Eventually, the whole look of the place is going to be another New Albany." Mike Cannon, Harlem's director of zoning and development, says that some residents aren't enthusiastic about losing farmland to new housing and shopping centers. However, he believes guardrails are in place to avoid losing the rustic atmosphere of the township. "I think it's going to explode here," he says. "But we've got zoning and standards in place for it to be developed in a nice manner." Development is planned to begin in 2026.

Midcentury-inspired homes and sprawling estates with acreage
With vast acres of greenery, Harlem is not where homebuyers will find subdivisions and crowded neighborhoods. Instead, houses typically have room for privacy, often with several acres per lot. Long stretches of road go for miles through uninterrupted farmlands and green spaces. Houses are customized with farmhouse-style exteriors in wood or brick. Midcentury-inspired split-levels, Cape Cods and ranch-style homes start in the low $300,000s and peak in the low $600,000s, depending on size and acreage. Neo-traditional homes are available between the low $500,000s and the low $900,000s. Custom-built estates with lots of acreage typically go from the mid-$900,000s to the $1.5 million range.
